The Basilica, renowned for its history, art, and faith, dates back to the year 1000. The original church, called Sant'Andrea "infra hortos in Pincis," a title later translated to "delle Fratte" or "degli arbusti," is mentioned in numerous historical documents dating from the 12th century. Granted by Pope Sixtus V to the Minims of St. Francis of Paola to assume their office and governance, the complete reconstruction of the dilapidated building was immediately decided and begun. The work, begun in 1604 based on a design by Gaspare Guerra, was continued by Borromini between 1653 and 1655 and later completed by Mattia De Rossi. On January 20, 1842, the apparition of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal to the incredulous Jew Alphonse Ratisbonne elevated it to the category of Basilica and Marian Sanctuary. A painting, much venerated by popular piety, illustrates the Virgin Mary at the moment of her apparition to Regensburg and, due to the numerous conversions that were recorded before this highly venerated image, Pope Benedict XV called the Temple of the Apostle Andrew "the Roman Lourdes". To the left of the great nave, entering through the main door, is the illuminated altar where the Virgin Mary appeared. A painting, much venerated by Christian devotion, vividly testifies to the unexpected conversion of Alphonse Ratisbonne, who knelt as a Jew and rose as a Christian. "I saw on the altar, standing, alive, large, majestic, beautiful, merciful, the Blessed Virgin Mary," are the words of his confession, thanks to which the apparition of the Virgin could be considered one of the first apparitions of Mary in Italy, duly approved by the Holy See. The works of Borromini, a precursor of the now inevitable 18th century, with the grace of undulating forms, the ingenious combination of concave and convex, and the grace and wisdom that also helped him to deviate from the norm, produced in this style one of his masterpieces in Sant'Andrea delle Fratte. Despite being incomplete, Borromini's work remains, according to Piacentini, "a daring work, with its architectural decoration still in exposed brick, highly original in the incessant undulations of the surfaces and cornices, so Roman in the broad cut of the masses and in the brown color of the old terracotta." The bell tower is a jewel of Borromini architecture of rare refinement, composed of four sections, precisely superimposed. On a high square base, topped at the corners by columns with Corinthian capitals and crowned by a large architrave, rests the bell tower, a structure reminiscent of a small circular temple, evoking similar ancient constructions in Rome and Tivoli. The eight columns that compose it are joined by masonry, two by two, leaving spaces for the movement of the bells. The volutes of the capitals contain perfectly executed heads that support the pediment. On each side of the high altar are two large marble statues of angels carrying instruments and symbols of the Passion of Our Lord. Taller than life-size, the two statues are the originals that the artist sculpted at the age of seventy to decorate the Ponte Sant'Angelo, commissioned by Pope Clement IX. These were part of the ten angels that Bernini designed for the bridge, but only these two were executed by him, while the others were entrusted to his students. The Pope considered it inappropriate for these masterpieces to remain exposed to the effects of time and left them in the artist's studio for his nephew, Cardinal Jacopo Rospigliosi. They then passed into the possession of the artist's heirs until 1731, when they were generously donated by Prospero Bernini, the Cavaliere's nephew, to the church of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte.

09/12/2025: Great spot in Trastevere for fresh seafood. Nice wine list too- we had a Sicilian Etna Bianco with a sea bass and other good plates. Fun music - Blossom Dearie, jazz, etc. Attentive, kind service.

30/11/2025: Cappuccino Doc is an amazing and cute cafe. I’ve been here many times and the staff is always friendly. Both coffee & pastries are tasty, but you can also go there for aperitivo. I honestly recommend visiting.

Quality ingredients, top-notch dough, and the art of lovingly putting them together—you can savor everything from the first bite! I stumbled upon it after finishing lunch! Just the sight of it piqued my cravings, then as I got closer and smelled the aromas, I stopped, and my senses were right! Congratulations!

08/11/2025: €20 for three pieces of pizza (I even told him one was €2), two supplì, and a water. Hmm… I get the impression the two gentlemen are setting their prices a bit out of affection. I'll give you the €20 up to €0.40. Money comes and goes like customers, a cup in the face is forever. 😎🫶

04/12/2025: I come to this restaurant almost once a week and it's become a true must-try. It's perfect for a quick dinner for two without a reservation, or for when I have guests from out of town. The menu combines traditional Roman dishes with more original options for those like me who like to change things up every now and then! My absolute favorites are the sea bream tartare carbonara and the pasta carbonara, both classic and with truffle: always impeccable!! Highly recommended!!!

28/11/2025: This restaurant was close to our hotel, so we ended up eating there every evening — and I’m so glad we did. The staff were welcoming, attentive, and always willing to recommend dishes or give us advice. They made us feel comfortable and well taken care of each time. Not to mention the food — everything we tried was delicious, genuinely nothing to complain about. Great service, great atmosphere, and excellent cuisine. I don’t regret choosing this place at all and would highly recommend it.

Alessandra is incredibly helpful and friendly, and after a lovely stroll through the village, it's a must to stop by and refuel with the excellent dishes prepared by Ale's mother. Traditional local cuisine; the wild boar stew and the "La Torretta" first course are highly recommended. A must-try for anyone wanting to enjoy a day in Blera.

07/12/2025: I've been a regular customer for years, both in summer and winter. Whatever season you come, you'll eat deliciously, with quality ingredients and excellent service. Alessandra, the owner, is incredibly kind and goes out of her way to accommodate even the strangest requests. I'll close by saying that if you want to feel pampered at home and eat well, you've come to the right place.

17/11/2025: Hi, it's been years since I've had gelato here, and it's still as good. I had a cone with pistachio, stracciatella with salt crystals, and Raffaello. Prices are a little above average, but I understand the area has become a tourist hotspot. I'm sorry for the girl at the counter, though; I haven't seen her as particularly suited to a job serving customers.

14/11/2025: Lady behind the counter was super sweet. Give me so many samples and then made up some fresh homemade whipped cream for me had no charge. Delicious ice cream and incredible service. Five stars all the way.
