11/04/2025: Después de llegar a Florencia por la tarde sin haber almorzado, buscamos un restaurante que estuviera abierto al final de la tarde. Había leído buenas críticas para Lo Scudo, primero asegurándome de que no había ningún cargo por servicio, ya que Florencia es famosa por pedir propinas o agregar cargos adicionales. Quedamos muy contentos con nuestras comidas (lasaña y espaguetis con almejas) con pan sabroso gratis para empezar y limoncellos de cortesía. El camarero era joven y atento, y hablaba inglés con fluidez. Desafortunadamente, agregó un cargo por servicio, destacándolo en el cheque con un marcador. Cuando le pregunté al respecto, dijo que era “típico” en Florencia y admitió que no está publicado en el menú exterior y dijo que no teníamos que pagarlo. Pero añadí 8€ a la factura, lo que hace que esta sea la comida más cara que tuvimos en nuestras 2 semanas en Umbría, donde los precios son mucho más baratos.

Sometimes, the best experiences happen by pure chance. That’s exactly how we stumbled upon Antica Trattoria La Toppa, a hidden gem in the heart of Tuscany.
It was our first time in this breathtaking region, and we wanted to immerse ourselves in the local culture. I had bookmarked this little trattoria while planning our family vacation, and since we were staying at a nearby winery outside San Donato, it seemed like the perfect spot for our first dinner.
Pro tip: Be ready to walk! San Donato is a tiny, charming town where cars aren’t allowed inside, so you’ll have to park on the outskirts. Trust me, the short stroll through the medieval streets only adds to the experience.
As we arrived, I confidently asked for a table for four—only to be met with a surprised look. “Do you have a reservation?” the host asked. Rookie mistake. This wasn’t a tourist trap; this was a true local institution, where the townspeople gathered for their nightly meal. But luck (or maybe fate) was on our side. The owner, warm and welcoming, found a way to squeeze us in.
Walking into La Toppa felt like stepping into Nonna’s dining room—cozy, inviting, and filled with the scent of something incredible cooking in the kitchen. The staff was beyond friendly, happy to guide us through the menu, and the wine selection? Impeccable.
Determined not to repeat my rookie mistake, I made a reservation for our last night in Tuscany—one final indulgence before heading to Venice. When we returned, the owner greeted us with a smile, clearly amused that I had learned my lesson. We started with delicious appetizers, but the real showstopper was the Bistecca alla Fiorentina.
Before cooking, the chef himself came to our table, proudly displaying the massive cut of steak. “How would you like it prepared?” he asked. Without hesitation, we replied, “Chef’s choice.” His face lit up—a chef’s dream answer. Moments later, he returned with the most perfectly cooked steak, sliced and ready to be devoured.
As we dug in, the owner and his father checked on us, grinning when they saw us passing around the massive bone, making sure we didn’t waste a single bite. The ultimate seal of approval? The owner’s father nodding in satisfaction as we unabashedly enjoyed our meal the Tuscan way.
When it was time to leave, the chef personally thanked us for letting him cook for us—a true honor. But the night wasn’t over yet. As we went to pay, the owner ran into technical issues with his payment system, clearly frustrated. After sorting it out, he surprised us with a bottle of house wine, insisting we take it as a token of appreciation.
Oh, and did I mention? La Toppa is featured in the Michelin Guide. But even if it weren’t, it would still be one of the best places I’ve ever accidentally walked into.
Lesson learned: Some accidents are meant to happen.
17/03/2025: They reported on the external booking portal that I didn't show up at the scheduled time when in fact I had lunch there and I had a receipt with the date and time.

The place is not very big but very warm! The decoration is super nice, very authentic...

08/04/2025: The Yellow Bar is a corner of authenticity in the center of Florence. The quality of the dishes and ingredients is very high, with a wide choice both for the cooking and pizzeria parts (pizza has become my favorite of all time).
The atmosphere, even more so after the restyle, is elegant and familiar at the same time and the smile and warmth with which the people who work there welcome you certainly makes the difference. See you soon <3
05/04/2025: Pizza here is absolutely amazing. The tbone tastes like eating a filet mignon it's so tender. The garlic pepper pasta with the steak is out of this world. Everyone should eat here if they're in florence

16/04/2025: I tried the aperitif with friends, local wine both by the glass and in the bottle. The costs for the wine are more than fair if you are more than 4 people I recommend the bottle instead of glasses, the only flaw is the platters of cold cuts and cheeses, we asked for the platter for 5 people and we had to divide slices of cheese and cold cuts, given that on the platter there were 2 slices of cheese and a few cold cuts, premise we had asked for a platter for 5 people not for two. For the rest I recommend it, in the historic center of Monte Carlo.
09/04/2025: Magical evening! We arrived a little before dinner time. The kitchen was not yet open and the owner offered us an aperitif and gave us some snacks while we waited. The food was excellent and the service attentive. Lots of atmosphere and it's a lovely place. Definitely worth visiting if you are in the region!

06/04/2025: Otto tavoli, solo ventuno posti, ambiente piccolo ma accogliente, Per 21 si trova accanto a Piazza dell’Anfiteatro ed è gestito da Julia in sala e Gabriele in cucina, tornato in Italia dopo una lunga esperienza all’estero. La Cucina è contemporanea e prevalentemente di mare e combina piatti tradizionali con abbinamenti originali come il branzino alla piastra con salsa di zenzero fresco che accompagna, con la sua dolcezza, la delicatezza del pesce. Meno riuscito lo spaghettone all’arrabbiata con astice perché il piccante copre il sapore delicato dell’astice, peraltro cotto alla perfezione. Buoni anche i pici con sugo di maiale marinato sette giorni nel vino rosso e lemongrass. Molto leggera e fresca la panna cotta al latte di cocco con fragole marinate nell’aceto balsamico. Carta dei vini non molto ampia ma con un buon rapporto qualità- prezzo. Da segnalare i menu’ degustazione di pesce al prezzo di 28 euro ( due portate) e 38 euro (tre portate)

23/03/2025: Third time dining here. Came back for the food and hoped that the previous service experiences were rare bad days. Unfortunately it was not. Very disorganized. I know in general there is a shortage of wait staff in Italy, especially in these more rural locations, but other restaurants have found ways to cope. Quality of locally sourced ingredients are excellent. But the chaos of the restaurant (tons of kids, which is normal for a Sunday but still adds a layer of noise that isn't enjoyable for many plus dogs whining, and the exasperation of tables trying to get servers' attention) combined with the very random music, and terribly slow and at times very tense service isn't worth it. 20 minutes for water. Another 15 minutes to get our order taken. Another half hour for apps and drinks to arrive. Another 40 minutes for entrees. Instead of fresh ombrina arrived frozen swordfish. I really want to enjoy this place, and the staff under other circumstances seem to be nice, but it feels like the organization was formed by someone without restaurant experience. All that said, they have an amazing view on the beach. If they could at least be faster with the water, bread and drinks, the waits would be more forgivable. I will probably wait another six months before I try again.
31/12/2024: Spacious, modern, elegant room with large terrace with a view of the sea, wonderful to say is an understatement. Courteous, efficient, competent staff complemented by a chef who invents tasty and high-impact dishes. Rich assortment of especially local wines, well-stocked bar and excellent coffee. Definitely worth returning and recommending to those looking for tasty specialties

They are very kind, helpful, smiling and I want to underline this because for a while now it has often happened that you find long faces and feel as if you are annoying yourself even though you pay. The pizza is excellent, shallow as I like it, well cooked, the ingredients are tasty and fresh. The environment is beautiful, well organized and above all clean, including the bathroom. Really good!

29/03/2025: A pizzeria with a history. Even though the place looks simple and old-fashioned, the staff is very kind and helpful, with a good pizza, with various types to choose from. The dough is excellent, I recommend the double dough, because it makes you feel the true quality of the pizza. I went there for three days in a row and tried different varieties, including the thin dough. I really recommend this place if you are passing through. Advance booking is recommended, considering that on weekdays it works quite well.

15/04/2025: Such a warm and friendly welcome from the waiter; they agreed to see us and serve us after 10 p.m. even though we were the only customers.
We were truly charmed by the staff's professionalism, the very pleasant setting, and the reasonable prices (€75 for 2 people, each including a starter, main course, and dessert, plus a coffee, a bottle of water, and the cost of copperto).
Many thanks to the team for their kindness, their advice, and the quality of the dishes, both in terms of flavor and quantity.
