Trattoria Cacciatori e Pescatori

Giussago

Castana
26/09/2023: Castana...and known for its fine wine production...even if it has interesting historical finds within itself, the name of the village derives from the chestnut groves that characterized the surrounding hills. In ancient times it was baptized with the name of Castrum Castanae which derived from chestnut groves, this was a small fortified chestnut centre. Castana was written in a 19th century map compiled by the historian Severino Capsoni, in the center of the village we still find the remains of a castle, which dominated the valley and which made the village a truly strategic point. It was built by the Pavia monks of San Bartolomeo in Strada. And it was the protagonist of various events in the 1200s, the village consisted of a fortification and all around there were a few houses with thatched roofs. The village was then devastated by the wars between the Cremonese and the Piacentini who were fighting against the Marquis of Monferrato. .who had taken refuge within the walls and for this reason the castle was set on fire, in 1531 it became part of the fiefdom of Broni and immediately after it passed to the lineage of the Borromeo, then the Arrigoni, and then passed to the Pallavicini. From what was a medieval village has now become a large wine center and is well known for its export wines including Barbera, Buttafuoco, Bonarda, Blood of Judah, Pinot, and Riesling.
