20/09/2025: We walked up without a reservation and were seated right away. The waitress was excellent as was the food. We had the fresh fish of the day and split it between us. It was worth the money.

The setting inside the historic Sassi caves provides a quiet, romantic hush that makes the meal feel special before the first plate even arrives. The menu is a thoughtful balance of rustic Materan tradition and modern technique. The lamb dishes were standout—perfectly tender and seasoned—and the wine list is extensive enough to impress any enthusiast. A must-visit for a polished dinner in the heart of the stone city.

03/05/2026: This place is one of the best meals we had in Italy. All the Italian traditional dishes but elevated with the best local ingredients. The place is super beautiful, the wine list is insane, and more importantly the staff is fantastic and so attentive. The quality to price ratio is also great. Highly recommended.

11/10/2025: We stayed at Borgo la Tana during the two central weeks of August. The property is beautiful, with well-kept gardens and spacious rooms—ours, a mini-apartment—with a small table and chairs outside to enjoy the cool evening breeze. The rooms are extremely clean and practical, equipped with drying racks, handy soap dispensers for both shower and hand soap, and a wall-mounted hairdryer. The entire staff was very friendly, from the cleaning ladies, always ready with a smile and ready to "fix" the mess on the beach, like sand and pebbles everywhere, to the waiters, who were also present but not pushy. The cuisine is varied, with both local and non-local meat and fish dishes, and there is a discreet and efficient restaurant manager who oversees the main meals. The property's true treasure, however, is Mr. Aldo, a man in love with his homeland, provided us with information on the main beaches to visit and any special offers available at the resorts, right from the first evening. He also provided pocket-sized brochures to take with us to reach our desired destinations. Finally, a special mention for the self-service breakfast we enjoyed every morning: homemade cakes, traditional pastries, fresh figs picked every morning, and honeycomb! 23/09/2025: We arrived as guests for a few nights. The rooms were excellent, clean, and the air conditioning worked well. On the first evening, we enjoyed dinner in the restaurant. It was tidy and the service very friendly. For us, it was very bright, which perhaps made the atmosphere a little less romantic. You can clearly see what you're eating. Both the tuna and the swordfish were overcooked and dry, but that might be due to the Southern Italian way of preparing them. For hotel guests, there's a breakfast buffet next to the pool. When we arrived, we thought it was a sandwich shop, but you can point to what you want and it's brought to you. Again, the service was very friendly. Swimming caps were required for the pool, an old Italian tradition we've encountered less and less frequently, this year only at Borgo La Tana.

24/05/2025: Abbiamo mangiato all'aperto, angolino delizioso e piatti tipici, tutto molto buono. Servizio impeccabile e silenzioso, peccato...credevo ci fosse più vista da seduti...ma basta affacciarsi che la splendida Matera appare in tutta la sua bellezza.

20/03/2026: In my opinion, the points in its favor are: the breakfast (excellent and plentiful), the location (not too crowded and not far from the main streets and squares), the friendliness and kindness of the owner.

16/02/2026: Very nice, charming rooms with classic furnishings. Breakfast was excellent, offering everything from savory to sweet. The desserts were made entirely by the owner, who was also incredibly kind. What can I say? A wonderful experience!

07/01/2026: Highly recommended, lunch on January 5th was excellent. I highly recommend it. They didn't give us a menu with prices, but we had no unpleasant surprises; the quality of the food and service was excellent for the price. Thanks to the owner for the orecchiette pasta made for our baby, they were truly delicious. The ravioli with creamed peppers were delicious, and the cod was delicious, with a very balanced flavor and fennel sauce. Go there, it's top-notch cuisine!

28/12/2025: I'd love to tell you how the food is, but we couldn't even get in...even though the place was completely empty, the owner was getting ready to smoke a cigarette, and the waiters were all folded...it was completely booked! You wouldn't think they have a welcoming attitude!

11/10/2025: A unique show, beautifully organized by Lucanian director Giampiero Francese. It all began about 25 years ago, even professionally, for Lucanian director Giampiero Francese, who returned last year to direct the Cinespettacolo "La Storia Bandita" in the Grancia Park of Brindisi Montagna.

28/04/2026: The bed was a bit hard for our preference, but staying in a cave is incredible and the experience will never be forgotten. There was a very large selection for breakfast and they catered to my gluten-free needs, upon prior request. They had fresh honeycomb and fresh homemade yogurt.

27/04/2026: Sleeping in one of their rooms is truly an amazing experience. Their interior garden is intimate and offers some shade, they offer fluffy towels & slippers + anything you could need for the bathroom. Also the breakfast was great, lots of great pastry, savoury options + fresh honeycomb. Beware that the humidity in the rooms is pretty high. Very close to the important things to visit in Matera. We were a group of 7 girls and we had a huge, long room with comfy beds for everyone & 3 bathrooms. PS: The hotel isn't that far from the parking lot but be prepared with some comfy shoes and a backpack, not a suitcase, ideally.

29/04/2026: You'd better order pizza here The food was pretty underwhelming. Given what Italian cuisine usually offers, this was just bland. My pasta ragù with lamb was essentially plain pasta — mostly olive oil — with just a few sparse bits of meat (see photo). The appetizer was the only thing that stood out in a positive way. The pasta was €15, which would be reasonable in Matera if the dish had been more substantial, but in this case it really didn’t feel worth it.

26/04/2026: Unfortunately, the evening was a total management disaster. We had a reservation for 10:00 PM, but despite being assured a wait of only "6 minutes," we were only able to be seated at 10:40 PM. The icing on the cake? They sat us at a still-empty table, setting the table while we were already seated. The organization then went haywire during the service: Drinks arrived after 20 minutes, except for a glass of wine, which arrived a full 40 minutes later. For the main courses, we waited an hour to finally see the food. It's a shame that the appetizers and first courses arrived at the same time, completely ruining the point of the dinner. Even though we were the only ones in the restaurant at 11:30 PM, the pizzas arrived another 25 minutes late, served one at a time (forcing us to eat in shifts). As for the cuisine, the dishes were very poor in content and toppings. Although the price is average, the quality-to-quantity ratio (combined with terrible service) makes the experience completely inadequate. We won't be returning.

03/05/2026: In the heart of the Sassi, a very cute and clean little terrace. Very good traditional cuisine and friendly, attentive staff. I recommend it. They open at 12:00!!

03/05/2026: This restaurant was discovered by chance while visiting the city. Good, authentic food. The orecchiette with turnip greens were delicious and rich. Clean place, attentive staff, and a very friendly owner. Recommended.

23/07/2025: We ate at the outdoor tables, a pleasant atmosphere, spectacular fried anchovies, cruschi peppers, and a super black sandwich with octopus! The girl at the tagoli was lovely.
