Baccanti In Matera

Highly recommended. As my first experience at a high-end restaurant, I couldn't have made a better choice. The dishes have a bold flavor, and the staff is very knowledgeable, cheerful, and welcoming. This restaurant is the perfect choice for celebrating, as in my case, an anniversary or any important occasion.

Matera and its Sassi has been a true discovery! It’s so magic I struggle to find the right adjectives to describe it and Baccanti with its food and phenomenal staff has been the cherry on our cake. Food - from the bread itself (it feels like you never had bread before) to finish it has been quite an experience. Noteworthy: Candele pasta, you may thank me later. Location - right in front of the Gravina, overlooking the Neolithic village, you’ll find this very elegant, non pretentious coast restaurant. It is actually built inside a cave, in one of the ancient Sassi. One of a kind! Staff - my judgment here might be a bit biased as our waiter, a young guy with a very positive attitude, passion for his own traditions and always smiley, reminded me of someone very close to me who unfortunately passed way a long time ago and way too soon. In fairness the entire staff was very informative, kind and attentive. 10 out of 10. If I really have to find a not so positive note, then I would call out the maitre himself. Perhaps he just had a bad day, but he had a quite arrogant attitude to the point it felt he didn’t belong there. However, we’ve had such a nice time and we only interacted with him at the time of taking orders and at payment, that he couldn’t manage to spoil our evening. After our dinner I was so satisfied that I didn’t feel like driving back to our hotel and decided to just check-in at BV Quarry Hotel upstairs. Separate review on that experience.

An outstanding dining experience from start to finish. We found Baccanti through the Michelin Guide, and it exceeded our expectations. The setting is beautiful, and there are lovely spots nearby for an aperitivo with a stunning view over Matera before dinner. We started with the beef tartare and the mussels, both of which were excellent. The quality of the ingredients and the attention to detail were evident in every dish. Fantastic bread and oliver oil!!!!!!! For our main courses, we had the braised beef cheek and a homemade pasta. The beef cheek was exceptional and is an easy recommendation. The pasta was also delicious. It’s freshly made in-house and prepared in a traditional Italian style, so if you’re used to softer, American-style pasta, don’t mistake authentic texture for undercooking. The dessert menu was creative, and although I missed seeing a classic tiramisu, our server recommended another dessert instead, and it was absolutely fantastic. The wine was equally impressive and offered great value. What truly made the evening special was the service. The staff were attentive, professional, and made us feel genuinely welcome from the moment we arrived. A special thank you to Dominique, who took wonderful care of us throughout the evening. Your recommendation for the local delicatessen was also much appreciated. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to visit this trip, but we’ll certainly be back. When we return to Matera, Baccanti will be our first dinner reservation. Bravo, and thank you for a memorable evening!
