Tucked away from the chaos of St. Mark’s Square, it’s the kind of place where you can sit outside, watch the locals go about their day, and actually feel like you’re in Venice rather than a theme park version of it. The walls are covered in classic movie posters, giving the place a personality that’s as warm as the food. The pizza is the real deal: perfectly blistered crust, fresh toppings, no frills, no fuss. The kind of meal that reminds you why Italian food doesn’t need to be complicated to be great. The risotto is also worth ordering, and don’t sleep on the starter bread. It puts most other restaurants in the city to shame. Service is warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. On a good night, they’ll send you off with a complimentary limoncello, a lovely touch that caps the meal perfectly. Honest food, honest prices, and you will leave full. Dine among Al Pacino and Marilyn Monroe and leave wondering why you didn’t find this place sooner. Skip the tourist traps near St. Mark’s and make the walk to Cannaregio. Your stomach and your wallet will thank you.

30/05/2026: The worst dining experience we had in Italy by far. We ordered a pizza, which was average but acceptable, and a pasta carbonara. Unfortunately, the carbonara was terrible — I couldn’t eat it at all. It had an unpleasant smell and lacked any real flavor. When I mentioned this to the waiter, he explained that carbonara is made with raw eggs, as if that was the issue. I am well aware of how a traditional carbonara is prepared; the problem was that the dish tasted and smelled off. The staff was polite, but the food quality was extremely disappointing. I would recommend avoiding this place and choosing one of the many better restaurants in the area.

30/05/2026: The waiter was immediately kind and available to seat us, attentive in his service, and very friendly and welcoming. We ate well; the fish was cleaned at the table quickly and accurately. It was a positive experience, especially because the guys are very friendly and stayed to chat for a while after dinner.

14/04/2026: Ombra del Leone is a lovely restaurant located right on the Grand Canal, so yes, it's on the pricier side, but absolutely worth every euro. The setting is what truly sets it apart: far from the tourist crowds, you can enjoy a peaceful meal with breathtaking canal views. We actually visited on a rainy night, so dining outside wasn't an option, but even without sitting al fresco, everything was absolutely perfect. Inside, the atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the service never missed a beat. Everything we ordered tasted amazing. The menu offers plenty of seafood dishes to choose from. We tried the spaghetti with sea urchins, the lemon swordfish bites with potatoe cream and the veal milanese, everything cooked to perfection. The staff was attentive without being intrusive, making sure we had everything we needed. If you're looking for a memorable dining experience in Venice away from the chaos, Ombra del Leone is a must visit rain or shine. Highly recommended!

31/05/2026: I went for lunch on Sunday, May 31st, and it was HORRIBLE. The main course arrived before the main course, and I had to ask for bread and grated cheese, which should be the default when you order a first and second course. The courses didn't arrive together, but in batches. They forgot to bring the fried food (if you can call it that), and after 20 minutes I had to remind them again. I won't be returning, and I'll advise my colleagues who live in the area against it.

16/05/2026: We used to go to this place many years ago. It's still just as pleasant. The staff has changed, but the welcome is warm. The menu offers a wide selection, the food is very good, and the prices are reasonable.

12/05/2026: I really wanted to love this place because it felt as authentic as it can get, and I hesitated writing this review because I never want to hurt a small local business. But the experience was disappointing enough that it feels important to share. The restaurant did not feel very clean: the salt shakers were dirty and some of the cutlery still had small food residue on it. We ordered a meat lasagna, a lemon cream pasta, and a caprese “salad.” The lasagna felt like it had been reheated in a microwave before serving. The pasta portion was very large, but extremely dry and honestly difficult to finish. The caprese salad was roughly cut tomatoes with cheese(-which was actually good), but even the olive oil and balsamic dressing came in small packaged sachets for self Assembly Despite all of this, I still felt sympathetic toward the owners and wanted to support the business. However, things became uncomfortable when it was time to pay. We had already calculated the expected total beforehand, which should have been €32, but the owner independently decided to add an extra €4 service charge. We would have gladly tipped on our own, but choosing an amount and demanding it as a service fee felt unreasonable. To make it even stranger, we were not given a receipt at all. everything was written manually on a small pink piece of paper, which she kept herself.

15/05/2026: Despite a terrace with a lovely view of a calm canal and gondolas, the portions are disappointing for the price; expect a €4 cover charge and a 12% service charge. The spaghetti vongole were good, as were the tagliatelle with ragù, but the portion was child's size for over €20. The tiramisu was nothing special and had been prepared in advance in small bowls in the fridge. The waiters, however, were very helpful.

10/05/2026: Rudeness as an appetizer, pasta with sandy clams covered in oil as a first course, raw liver as a second course (they say they make it "pink" but it was literally raw, I didn't think I'd ordered tartare, inedible), unfairly high bill. If you don't want to be a waiter, your doctor won't prescribe it. Furthermore, after all this rudeness, they even had the nerve to ask for a tip.

02/01/2026: I know the place well, and we're aware of its reputation for being an extremely good place, but its prices aren't always affordable. With that necessary premise in mind, we go for an aperitivo anyway, where we ask the waitress for two glasses of wine: a classic method and a fruity still white, and the very kind waitress offers to suggest options for us. We serve a Slovenian Chardonnay and an Enrico Serafino Alta Langa classic method. Everything is perfect, except that when we ask for the bill, the Slovenian wine is listed at €4.50, while the second one is €14.50, a price that I honestly consider excessive, considering it's not champagne and that if you buy a bottle privately at the wine shop, it costs €25. We would certainly have appreciated it if the waitress, when she suggested the wine, had shared the cost per glass with us in advance.

03/05/2026: I went to Essentiale with high expectations... and they were surpassed without further ado. The cuisine has a clear identity, you can taste it right away: few ingredients, well-prepared, with a precise idea behind each dish. You can really feel the craftsmanship; it's not the usual "tourist" fare. Among the dishes that stick in my mind: the cuttlefish tagliatelle with cacio e pepe, ink, and chives is incredible—creamy, intense, with that ink that amplifies everything without overpowering it. It's a dish I'd call brilliant! The handmade tagliatella with clams was delicious! The pasta was incredible, with the freshest clams. You can also sense so much attention to detail: homemade bread (and it shows), and young but attentive service. This is precisely why I struggle to understand some of the recent negative reviews I read online. In my experience, I found the cuisine to be thoughtful, coherent, and full of personality—which is far from a given, especially in an area so full of similar offerings. The service was attentive, young, but passionate and friendly. In my opinion, it's one of those places worth trying for yourself, without being overly influenced.

03/05/2026: I was visiting Venice as a tourist and discovered Essentiale almost by chance: one of the best dinners of my trip. A beautiful terrace overlooking the lagoon, a relaxed atmosphere, and truly well-crafted dishes. The cuttlefish “cacio e pepe” with squid ink was an incredible surprise, as was the homemade bread. And the tiramisu? The best I’ve ever had in my life. Honestly, after reading some negative reviews, I was a bit hesitant, but my experience was completely the opposite. If you’re looking for an authentic, refined place with a great view, this restaurant is absolutely worth a visit.
