19/04/2026: I'm sorry, I don't usually leave negative reviews, but unfortunately my stay at this place wasn't pleasant! The place itself is charming, despite its small size. We had an appetizer consisting of a good salami, mozzarella, mushrooms, and olives. However, the problem was the pizza. It wasn't well-leavened, the sauce was slightly acidic, and it was extremely spicy (I chose smoked scamorza, zucchini, and spicy spianata). Evidently, besides the spianata (which I usually eat), there was something else spicy. I don't mind strong flavors, but this pizza was decidedly inedible. It was as if someone had spilled a jar of chili pepper oil on it. I've been around far and wide, and until now, I've never left a pizza half-eaten... Needless to say, my stomach wasn't thankful (on a positive note, the bathrooms are very clean 😉). Guys, your staff is friendly, and it's a shame the pizza isn't up to Angelo's expectations. The place is quaint; I don't just want to criticize but also to encourage improvement. Come on!

07/04/2026: Terrible experience!! Avoid at all costs! You're only paying for the location; otherwise, the food and service are zero. The pizza had very few toppings. The seafood pizza had no cheese, just a few pieces of seafood and tomato sauce. Very expensive for nothing.

13/06/2026: Update: the manager pulled me aside for a chat. It was strange but at least showed he very much cared. I’ve updated my rating as such, but maintain that you are paying essentially double what you might elsewhere, for the view. If you’re happy to do that, you’ll be happy here. Beyond the genuinely stunning views, this place is really nothing special. The rooms are very basic, but they’re charging a premium price for what’s outside the window. The maid and cleaning service is great (but be warned laundry is very expensive though that’s not uncommon). It’s all just adequate. Not really any particularly special amenities. Not carefully designed (at least compared to many other hotels I’ve stayed at in the country). Very spotty WiFi which I thought was just the area but the public WiFi worked better in Monterosso. The parking was a nightmare and they do not provide useful instructions for finding it. If this was a $300-$400 a night hotel, it would be perfect; but it’s a $700-$800 a night hotel and is thus in my opinion, overpriced. If you plan on exploring the area, you can get the same views for free (or even for dinner) and skip the hefty price tag. Regarding staying in Portovenere. It’s beautiful, obviously. Stunning. As are the other 5 cities and at least 2 have a bit more going on and a lot more convenience. Portovenere is near impossible to get to after 9pm (for the price, it would be ideal if the hotel would offer some sort of shuttle service even for an extra cost). It’s clearly a perfect city for weekenders looking to escape most of the tourism (though a surprising amount still exists here). But maybe not for first-timers to the area looking to explore. Overall, fine hotel, but it just isn’t bringing the value it requests.

07/06/2026: We spent two days in Portovenere and on Sunday we needed luggage storage: the only service in town wasn't available. We asked the Grand Hotel for a favor—aware that it doesn't officially offer storage—simply because, with two backpacks, we wouldn't be able to enjoy the day at the beach. After several initial refusals, we managed to convince the staff that they would hold our bags for a few hours. At that point, however, the response was: "Okay, we'll do it for you, but only if you leave us 50 euros." This request, we consider excessive for a temporary and unscheduled favor, was striking. Besides the disproportionate price, we were struck by the total lack of courtesy: we would have expected at least a helpful and understanding attitude toward two tourists who simply wanted a morning on the beach.

06/08/2026: Charge extra (16€!) for bread and water which is offered as if for free. Small portions. Due to some difficulties we couldn't order different pasta flavours. The food was good though.

02/08/2026: I’ve had some amazing food in Italy - but this was something else. We just happened to walk by and stop for a bite to eat. Best lunch I’ve ever had. We had the mussels. I am packing that memory of the flavours with me in my suitcase.

11/10/2025: I was out walking the dogs at Gaiazza and it was getting late, I called and asked if we could eat something... Despite the time and the 4 dogs they told me to go anyway... They were very kind and helpful.. and I ate a delicious plate of trofie with pesto!!!

22/07/2026: This is no longer the same restaurant, as the chef has changed and he/she has failed at every dish. For example, the sea bass with coarse salt was bone dry and served with ordinary potatoes and beans, for 40 euros. No manager was present, which was scandalous. What a decline after all these years. It's hard to believe that there are such incompetent professional chefs. Another example: the foie gras marinated in Calvados was completely burnt! Service was provided by inexperienced young people. Unacceptable for these prices. Perhaps the view is stunning, but that's not their fault. One of the worst meals of our lives. Shameful!

18/07/2026: BEWARE OF THE CHEF! These crafty people on the website have removed the previous chef, MARNO, from the kitchen. He hasn't worked at Balzi Rossi for over six months. Reading the updated reviews, it's easy to explain why.

22/07/2026: Excellent quality products for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Roman dinner is fabulous. The staff is helpful, and the owners are very kind and professional.

25/06/2026: Divine ! I thoroughly enjoyed my prawn bisque pasta and the flavours of mums calamari dish we so unique and well balanced. We also shared a delicious ‘salad’ which was half a lettuce topped with sauced and olives etc - not something i have had before but very delish. The staff were friendly, serving ware and venue were premier and of course you can’t beat the view.

24/06/2026: It was pretty expensive and the portions were to small for this price. Even 3.50€ for Cutlery.

14/08/2026: We went for breakfast and a snack: spectacular views overlooking the sea near the little church of Sant'Ampelio. Generous brioches filled with Nutella and jam, friendly and attentive service with glasses of water to accompany cappuccinos and biscuits, clean bathrooms: nothing better to start a beautiful day in Bordighera. The violet ice cream is unique.

13/08/2026: Very bad experience at La Réserve in Bordighera. We came today as 6 people, with a 4-year-old daughter, and frankly, the reception was really bad. We waited about 15 minutes at the entrance, in full heat, without anyone coming to see us. However, several servers and managers walked past us several times, without saying hello, without looking at us and without even asking us what we wanted. We clearly felt like we were being ignored. After 15 minutes of waiting, we had to go and ask ourselves if we could have a table. We were simply told: “No, it is not possible. » No apology for the wait, no explanation, nothing. We can completely understand that a restaurant is full or that there is no room for 6 people. But letting customers wait 15 minutes without even saying hello, especially with a 4-year-old child in the heat, is not normal. It was enough to simply come to see us from the start and tell us that there was no room. It would have taken 30 seconds. We found the reception very cold, very rude and not at all professional. We therefore left very disappointed and with a very bad image of this restaurant. We will not be returning and we clearly do not recommend it. ⸻ Bad experience at La Riserva di Bordighera. We came today as a group of 6 people, with a 4-year-old girl, and honestly, the reception was really bad. 08/05/2026: We had a very good meal, the staff were particularly friendly. Beautiful view of the harbor. A very good place to eat.

06/05/2026: We had lunch there and ordered two types of pasta: penne and Alfredo spaghetti. The spaghetti was incredibly rich. We also ordered a fried chicken strip, which was delicious. The only downside is that it's charged 5 euros per person, plus there's a tax on every order. They could have just offered one of the two. And I thank Ms. Nisreen for her excellent service.
