05/08/2025: The waitress and waiter are incredible and super welcoming! The staff is super helpful and always smiling. And don't even mention the food, it's absolutely delicious!!! Go for it! At 8 pm on a weekday, it's super quiet :)

We ordered octopus salad, spaghetti with clams, and fried calamari: everything was super fresh, perfectly cooked, and incredibly tasty. Special thanks to the gentleman with glasses who served us; he was extremely kind and attentive. Impeccable service! We'll definitely be back. Highly recommended!

19/08/2025: We booked for Ferragosto, certain of previous experiences where we had a great time, I must say that the place is really very welcoming but, this time we didn't eat well at all, apart from the grilled fish which was really very good, the rest was not great both in flavour and quantity, minimal appetizers for 5 adults a dish of mussels in white with no flavour, not to mention the fregola and the paccheri, raw, and the flavours non-existent a dish on top of that for 5 people I find absurd, the only positive note was the service excellent, shame we expected something more as it has always been 😞

17/08/2025: While on vacation in Cagliari, we discovered this restaurant, Da Paolo. We were greeted by smiling and welcoming waiters and waitresses. The well-maintained, airy, and bright atmosphere and the dishes were prepared with skill and, above all, love. We ordered the Sardinian fregola and the fried calamari, which deserve praise. It's a restaurant you'll want to return to again and again.

29/06/2025: Quando hai questi prezzi non puoi: 1) servire acqua minerale in bottiglia di plastica 2) far trovare nel sacchetto del pane un panino già spezzato (Spero a mano) 3) vedere la cameriera che dopo una portata di pesce toglie le posate e te le rimette sulla tovaglietta e solo dopo tuo appunto le porta via 4) scoprire che la "fantasia dello chef" citata nel trittico di mare sono dei pezzetti di salmone lisci Giudizio sui piatti: anonimi. 26/08/2025: First restaurant after setting foot in Sardinia, and I wasn't disappointed. I followed the advice of Lonely Planet and the reviews, and you can go there with your eyes closed. The waitress speaks English and gave good wine recommendations. I came on a Tuesday evening at the end of August for dinner alone without a reservation, and it was no problem. The fried octopus starter is absolutely divine. The taglioni are delicious. I couldn't continue with dessert because the first two courses were already quite generous. The restaurant has a very good wine and champagne list.

26/08/2025: The place is nice, well-kept, clean, and very professional. We went for dinner at 10 pm, and it was just the two of us. Probably because it's a bit hidden. The dinner wasn't bad, but it didn't strike me as anything special that would make it worth returning for. The service was courteous and efficient.

The staff is nothing short of fantastic and attentive; they take care of everything, making you feel pampered in every way. If there's an antidote to Instagram-worthy gastronomy, to tasting menus served by waiters in livery with the dead eyes of those condemned to death, it's here. In this stubbornly self-contained lair, where you still eat as if the '90s had never ended—and let's be clear: that's a compliment. Gigi, who isn't a waiter but an institution, is at the helm, a mix between the guide of fritto misto and the noisy, affectionate humanity that starred restaurants have eliminated with air conditioning. Always cheerful, the kind of person who makes you feel welcome even if you arrive late, with a crooked tie, and someone else's mother-in-law in tow. With him, you don't order: you negotiate, you discuss, you laugh. And you eat, oh, you eat. In the kitchen is Cristiana, who probably made a pact with the devil because she's managed to maintain the same level of quality since I had skinned knees and a Walkman in my backpack. She doesn't need to reinvent Sardinian cuisine, because she does it better than anyone without the need for hashtags. Simple, honest dishes, fragrant with good olive oil and true passion. Honorable mention for the fried food, which they also make gluten-free if time and schedule allow: crispy, golden, and without that "food compromise" face they give you in certain restaurants where the only inclusive thing is the bill. The atmosphere is the same as it was forty years ago, thank goodness. The place has seen more toasts than a gypsy wedding, and it's always had the unmistakable feeling of being in the right place. No performance anxiety, no neon lights to ruin your digestion. Just good food, loud voices, laughter, and bottles that empty without you even noticing. I've always been going there, and always will, because La Balena isn't just a restaurant: it's a refuge for those who understand that love for cooking isn't measured in Michelin stars, but in loyalty, humanity, and burrida. Well done Gigi, well done Cristiana. Never change. Even though I already know you won't. And thank goodness for that.
