After a short, winding drive, you arrive in a small mountain village where the air is crisp and the true landmark is this historic restaurant, open for over 50 years.
Buscone is all about local, zero-kilometer products, starting with the iconic Salame di Varzi and a full range of house-made cured meats. You'll find a well-crafted à-la-carte menu, but the real highlight is the excellent €40 tasting menu, which includes mixed appetizers, two first courses, one main, and dessert.
The dishes feature high-quality ingredients and thoughtful preparations, the standout being the juniper-braised venison with a Pinot Noir reduction, truly sublime.
The wine list showcases some of the most interesting wineries from the region, all at very reasonable prices.
A charming detail: several products, including their own Salame di Varzi, can be purchased directly on-site.
The staff is kind and welcoming, and the final bill is more than fair.

23/09/2025: Product Quality = 9. The Sacher Torte Mignons are a must-try.
Service = 8.
Place = 7. A bit small; in winter, it's hard to find a free table.
Restrooms = 6. They're clean, but you have to access them from outside, requiring a key. The toilet seat is torn from its anchors. I recommend investing a few euros.

08/09/2025: Count Enrico Malaspina, with a jovial air, welcomes us to the noble family mansion in Varzi for a guided tour. The day is splendid, as is the state of preservation of this building, which since Barbarossa (13th century) must have seen so much, including marching armies. It is located at a strategic crossroads between Lombardy, Piedmont, and Emilia. Today it is used for events, but its discreet and, frankly, most fascinating soul lies within, where portraits of austere ancestors gaze at you, curious to see people dressed in plebeian style. A particular highlight is the original antique furniture and books: time has stood still here. An impressive heritage that would make even more renowned manors envious. Worth visiting and enjoying. The Count is there waiting for us with that patience and disenchantment that evokes a bygone era.
28/08/2025: Makes a lovely day out driving through the beautiful countryside with stunning views of the valleys to arrive at this historical castle for a tour followed by a local wine and canapés tasting comprising of cheese, melons, torta and the very famous Varzi salami. If you’re in luck, you’ll get shown around by the future Count himself, Enrico Odetti, who is passionate about the historical importance of the castle and intent on preserving the legacy.

21/02/2026: A couple's dinner on Valentine's Day. Quality food, a welcoming and intimate atmosphere, excellent service. Kudos to Carolina for recommending the perfect wine to go with the dishes. She was professional in explaining the dishes and attentive to the customer's needs. Recommended.

12/04/2026: Six of us found ourselves in Varzi by chance during a Sunday stroll. After several crowded places, we found this one downtown. We were greeted warmly from the start, the staff were super friendly and attentive, and the menu was a bit limited, but the food was good. We ordered two braised ravioli, two carbonaras, and two malfatti. Good food, fast service, and a family atmosphere. The place is small but cozy. We'll definitely be back when we're passing through.
06/04/2026: What can I say, a fantastic experience! The staff is super friendly and attentive to their guests, always with a smile, and they even offered us focaccia! The eggplant meatballs were delicious and the dough was excellent. The fried gnocco was light and not at all greasy. Definitely a place to try!

04/04/2026: A dinner with my son in this little corner of Varzi. From the moment you arrive, you appreciate the small but well-kept and very tasteful location. The staff is extremely kind, smiling, discreet, and professional.
The dinner was enjoyable, the food was excellent, with just the right portions, and the wine was excellent. The bill... you can't expect to feel good, eat well, and pay little. Quality has to be paid for! I'll definitely be back.
We had the traditional appetizer, the green caramels and the chestnut flour tagliolini, and then the desserts!! 🥰 I don't remember what they're called, but I highly recommend them!

23/12/2025: A rustic, family-run restaurant in the heart of Varzi, highly regarded for its traditional Lombard cuisine, featuring local specialties such as homemade ravioli with braised beef, pisarei e faso (a kind of pasta with beans), local cured meats, and fresh artisanal pasta. These dishes are accompanied by homemade desserts and a wine cellar specializing in Oltrepò Pavese wines. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the service friendly and informal, and the excellent value (around €20-€30 per person) and generous portions make it ideal for a hearty lunch or dinner (though sometimes the service can be a bit long because the dishes are freshly prepared).

Bar Pizzeria la Rustica

29/08/2025: Very rustic pizzeria where they do a little bit of everything. The order taker was very kind, but a little absent-minded. The prices were reasonable. I didn't like the pizza, but maybe just because I'm used to a different kind of pizza. The fried foods were a little burnt. Overall, I wasn't thrilled with the food. I don't think I'd go back!
19/07/2025: We told the waitress about the pizzas, including a lactose-free one, which we trusted. When paying the bill, we heard some customers also ask another member of staff for lactose-free pizzas, but they replied that they didn't have lactose-free mozzarella and therefore recommended buffalo mozzarella instead.
At that point, we weren't sure if we'd eaten lactose-free pizzas since the staff's versions didn't match.
I'd like to add that the waitress who took the order seemed distracted when we asked for a pizza with stracciatella, which wasn't honored.
