Definitely worth mentioning are the homemade first courses (ricotta and spinach ravioli) and their desserts, tiramisu and fruit tarts, cream and strawberry dessert... friendly staff.
03/02/2026: A very quaint place, full of curious little objects. The pizza 🍕 is average, good but nothing special. The owner is very nice, and the waiters are very friendly and helpful. I went there for my birthday and they filled me with bubbles.

13/09/2025: This evening I returned to Café Matisse for dinner, having not been there in a while and still craving it.
The restaurant is located in Viadana, in the province of Mantua (Lombardy).
As usual, I was pleasantly surprised by the friendliness and kindness of the staff: qualities that are now rare in restaurants, almost as if they were forgotten virtues. At Café Matisse, however, the art of hospitality is still carefully cultivated.
The ambiance deserves special mention, distinguished by a style that is both formal and innovative, accompanied by pleasant background music that contributes to the harmonious and relaxing atmosphere.
Moving on to the dishes:
For my appetizer, I enjoyed a potato and spinach tart with Parmigiano Reggiano cream. A combination that, while it may seem predictable, proved to be balanced and completely successful. A small tip: the sage leaf used as a garnish would not be out of place if also inserted into the cream, as an additional aromatic note.
I then moved on to a Chianina beef burger, served with fresh vegetables and baked potatoes. The meat revealed a flavor both bold and refined; I opted for medium-rare, executed with mastery. The meat was rested properly, preventing any juices from escaping—an unmissable technical detail that deserves praise from the kitchen team.
Finally, for dessert, I chose a creamy mascarpone with saffron and hazelnut crumble. I must admit, I would have expected a more punchy finish. The combination of saffron and hazelnuts was interesting, although the hazelnuts were overpoweringly overpowered by the saffron. The cream, while full-bodied, soft, and silky on the palate, lacked the depth of flavor that would have made the dessert truly memorable.
In conclusion, Café Matisse confirms itself as a place worth experiencing, not only for the quality of its dishes, but also for its refined atmosphere and the selection of drinks that complement and enrich the dining experience. An ideal stop for those seeking an evening of taste and pleasant conviviality.
A sincere and heartfelt compliment goes to all the staff at Café Matisse: from the kitchen to the dining room, each one contributes with professionalism, elegance, and grace to making this venue a benchmark in Mantua's dining scene.

15/03/2026: It's rare for a dinner to combine nostalgia, surprise, and authentic gastronomic pleasure. That's exactly what happened last Friday at Trattoria degli Scalini, in the small village of San Matteo delle Chiaviche, in the municipality of Viadana, just a stone's throw from Mantua.
The occasion was special: a reunion of middle school friends. Even more special was the fact that the host—owner, manager, and chef—was one of us. There's no denying it, our curiosity was high.
The evening opened with a platter of seemingly "classic" cured meats: Parma ham, salami, and pancetta. Ingredients that on paper no longer surprise anyone, but here they demonstrated how quality makes all the difference. Accompanied by fragrant bread, they fulfilled their role perfectly: breaking the ice and preparing the palate with simplicity and authenticity.
The first real surprise came with turmeric gnocchi wrapped in a gorgonzola cream. A dish that to call balanced would be an understatement: soft, enveloping, yet surprisingly light. Each bite was an invitation to the next, with that rare feeling of wanting to slow down to savor it while simultaneously hoping the dish would never end.
The second course, macaroni with stew, confirmed the solidity of the cuisine. The meat, likely beef or donkey, was incredibly tender, almost buttery on the palate. If I really had to find a small flaw, it would be the creaminess that could have been slightly creamier. But it's a minor nuance in a dish that remains extremely convincing.
The red wine pairing, without wanting to delve into sommelier technicalities, complemented the first courses admirably, particularly enhancing the depth of the stew.
The finale was a true triumph of tradition. First, a chocolate tenerina, melting and intense, free of the bitter notes that sometimes dominate cocoa desserts. Personally, I would have appreciated a light sprinkling of salt, perhaps a few Maldon crystals, to create an even more intriguing contrast.
But the real highlight was the other star of the dessert: the famous Torta Sbrisolona, a gastronomic symbol of Mantua. Crumbly as per tradition, rich and fragrant, it capped off the dinner with that rustic elegance that only great traditional desserts can offer.
A round of applause undoubtedly goes to the dining room and kitchen, but the greatest recognition goes to Chef Marco. His journey is clearly evident: study, determination, and the desire to continually grow. It's the story of someone who has built himself step by step, with passion and sacrifice.
The advice for those who decide to stop here is simple: come in slowly and take your time to enjoy the experience. Because at Trattoria degli Scalini you can find something that is increasingly rare today: the sincere soul of an old Mantuan trattoria, reinterpreted with care and pride.

08/03/2026: Really cute place, exceptional food, everything excellent and high-quality, the fried gnocco is soft to the touch and soft to the taste, the cured meats are amazing and leave a taste in your mouth that you'll definitely remember long after you've finished eating.
The pumpkin and fried polenta are also fantastic, they melt in your mouth, and then that stuffed gnocco is truly wow 🤤, even the tigelle are delicious, soft and crunchy at the same time, in short, an experience not to be missed, come and you won't regret it at all, trust me 😋😜

Tigelle with Nutella are the perfect dessert to end your dinner!

04/01/2025: Siamo stati qui di passaggio da Sabbioneta. Bellissimo locale, suggestivo, ordinato. Personale gentile. Ma piatti normali. Antipasto normale, qualche salume e qualche gnocco fritto con una piccola giardiniera. Crespelle e ravioli buoni ma non speciali. Lo stesso per i dolci.
24/11/2024: Porzioni abbondanti e buona cucina casalinga: torta fritta per nulla unta, salumi non speciali, crespelle sfiziosissime, bigoli piacevoli. Locale molto evocativo.

20/04/2025: Osteria non proprio in una strada di passaggio, ambiente molto famigliare e confortevole. Ottimi gli antipasti (anche se sono vegetariano), veramente buona la mostarda. Primi di tortelli di zucca eccezionali, poi tortelli verdi. Piatti ottimi e abbondanti da provare.
20/02/2025: .. accade sempre cosi....arriva la popolarita ed ecco che il sign Tasso ti aumenta i prezzi fuori misura oramai si presenta con dei conti a voce da 40 € tortello e affettato .. se ne andata la vecchia cuoca e siamo in mano a raztdore moldave !!
si è persa la cucina della tradizione un vero peccato !!!!

18/05/2025: Ottimo posto per mangiare pesce fritto e rane . I menu è vario non solo pesce fritto anche se la specialità è pesciolini pascegatto e rane fritti . Servizio cameriere ottimo anche se quando siamo andati noi mancava una ragazza e ci sono state difficoltà . Abbiamo prenotato una settimana prima .
Due note dolenti : attesa inaccettabile, l antipasto è stato servito dopo un ora e mezza. L acustica nella sala , se è piena, non permette il dialogo con il vicino . Se andate a pranzo di domenica munitevi di pazienza e non abbiate fretta . Questa cosa andrebbe detta da chi prende la prenotazione.
La bontà del fritto fa dimenticare le negatività .

Il menù è molto ampio, sia pesce che carne; le pizze sono molto buone.
