01/05/2025: We dined at Sotto le Volte last night. It was a lovely experience, delicious food, delightful waitstaff and chef, in an enchanted cave-like setting. They made a special effort to cook delicious gluten free food for my coeliac husband. It was not too expensive and was by far the best meal we have had in Italy. Highly recommend.

09/05/2025: Wir waren zu Gast wegen der sehr guten Bewertungen der Küche. Der Gastraum ist sehr unterkühlt und entspricht nicht dem Ambiente eines gehobenen Restaurants. Die Terrasse hat allerdings einen ausgezeichneten Blick. Die Tische waren mit Gästen des Hotels besetzt, darunter eine große Reisegruppe. Service seitens der Sommelier sehr gut, die andere Dame mangelhaft. Wir wählten des Degustationsmenu mit Weinbegleitung. Nettes Amuse Buche, wenig Brot und das recht spät. Das pochierte Ei mit Trüffel als erster Gang ausgezeichnet, die beiden nachfolgenden Pastagerichte über dem Durchschnitt. Die gefüllte Entenkeule konnte nicht überzeugen, vom Anisgewürz durchdrungen, kein Entengeschmack muss man als nicht gelungen bezeichnen, ebenso das Dessert unterdurchschnittlich, ein Apfelküchlein mit viel süßer Haselnuss? creme gefüllt ohne nach Apfel zu schmecken. Die Säure des Apfels wäre nach den ungewöhnlichen 2 nachfolgenden Pastagerichten willkommen gewesen. Die Weinbegleitung war Durchschnitt, der Vermentino der Familie Zingarello keine Empfehlung für ihre sonstigen Weine, dagegen der Gewürztraminer aus dem Trentino Klasse, ebenso der Nebbiolo aus der Langhe.
Insgesamt ein sehr durchwachsener Eindruck. Die Küche kann deutlich mehr als das Menu gezeigt hat, die Komposition des Degustationsmenus muss man als unglücklich bezeichnen, ein leichter Zwischengang z.B. Gemüse der Saison anstelle eines 2. Pastagerichtes wäre die bessere Wahl.
Für die Hotelgäste ein willkommenes Restaurant, um von außerhalb gepflegt zum Dinner auszugehen passt die Leistung nicht zum Preis.

01/06/2025: By bike from Volterra to Montevarchi we stop in Castellina and looking for a restaurant and here we are at Fondaccio. We have the bikes and Mauro, the owner, has them stored inside with the possibility of recharging. For lunch, since we are from Trentino, we eat pici all'aglione and with cacio e pepe. A good beer and coffee with cantucci. A treat, since we were halfway.

28/05/2025: I had a very good pizza Chinatigiana – great crust and excellent toppings. Attentive service, but not intrusive. A nice place that's not just for tourists.

02/06/2025: Wonderful accommodation in the heart of Tuscany. We spent three excellent nights at this hotel, located on a hill overlooking the surrounding vineyards and olive groves. You can even see the towers of San Gimignano in the distance while having breakfast on the terrace.
The rooms are large, tastefully decorated, and have a kitchen and living room.
The staff is very friendly and helpful.
We will return if we have the chance.

21/05/2025: I don’t know how to begin this review, I am genuinely quite shocked at the meal.
This place was mentioned to us by the vineyard hotel as a “more casual option” as opposed to the fine dinning across the road. We thought this would suit us for an easy option and the photos online looked good.
There are very few options for food, like 6 things if you exclude the stuff that has been left in the counter all day (we assume). You would expect that means that they would do the few dishes very well… unfortunately the food was okay at best.
We witnessed a couple things are really brought hygiene into question - ie staff blowing nose in the middle of all the tables and not washing hands and people eating over our food as it was being brought out to us.
It cost €46 for 2 and I am quite downtrodden about the experience. This is NOT a proper restaurant and I would treat it as a bar for food only.
The wine was good, as you would expect in a vineyard but not enough to cheer our mood about the meal.

10/10/2024: Um restaurante italiano de topo, uma cozinha fantástica e um conjunto de empregados muito, mas muito simpáticos e profissionais.
10/09/2024: Tuvimos una reserva de cena tarde condujo en la oscuridad y el GPS nos redirigía. Cuando llegamos el lugar era espectacular, con viejas estructuras de piedra, iluminación increíble y un ristorante amurallado de vidrio muy relajante que se abre durante el día. El menú estaba preparado para la noche, eran mariscos y teníamos los maridajes de vinos. El tártaro de marisco y el atún Amberjack estaban perfectamente hechos y el postre era para morirse. El servicio era excelente, hablaba inglés muy bien y estaban muy bien informados. Muy recomendable reservar con antelación, ya que este no es un lugar perdido para comer cuando visite la zona de Castellina de la Toscana. El maridaje de vinos fue un poco apagado para mi gusto, pero el vino de postre Tuarita Sele de la zona de Sicilia fue excepcional

11/04/2025: Top gegeten voor de lunch. Er is geen kaart. Je kiest uit de toog je vlees en ze bakken dit. Of je laat je verrassen zoals wij en geniet heerlijk van Toscaanse keuken. De chef serveert wat hij die dag gemaakt heeft. Redelijke prijs en propere zaak!

15/07/2024: Lovely place with great potential, friendly staff.
Unfortunately, there is a lack of maintenance, the large umbrella is all torn and mouldy, the bar is falling apart, the tables are full of ants.
I'm there today, as it's Monday and the place is a bit isolated, we were around 20 people in the entire facility. I found the bathroom without paper, without soap, sunbeds and deckchairs all open in a disorderly manner. It seems to have been left unchanged by the Sunday crowd.
If for organizational reasons it is not possible to restore decorum on Sunday evening, let it open later on Monday, perhaps at a discounted price but those arriving cannot find it in those conditions.
Choosing that swimming pool means choosing relaxation and you can't find yourself there all morning with the attendant making noise because he's intent on cleaning up the dirt from the day before and throwing the sunbeds and deckchairs without the slightest consideration, placing them near us with a noticeable noise. .
Price list regularly displayed but a small portion of not exceptional pici cacio e pepe consumed in a dilapidated bar, 12.50 euros seemed a bit excessive to me. Even the sandwich I got, although well filled, had bread that wasn't fresh without us making an effort to at least give it a reheat.
It's a shame because there is general friendliness and the place would be really nice
08/07/2024: Fantastic place, friendly, attentive and friendly staff. An oasis immersed in the fantastic Chianti hills! A magical place.
Delicious food and good selection of beers and wine.
