Trattoria Lucana In Matera

A typical Lucanian trattoria with truly delicious dishes: we thoroughly enjoyed both the homemade soup and the soup with meatballs in tomato sauce, both flavorful and well-prepared. Unfortunately, however, the service wasn't up to par. The lady, presumably the owner, seemed rather haughty, while her daughter, who was taking orders, was even more so. We would have appreciated greater kindness, friendliness, and a modicum of savoir-faire. At various times, she was rude, even towards other customers: for example, with a table of undecided foreigners, she showed impatience, grumbling and huffing, turning away so as not to be noticed. Overall, a mixed experience: good food, but the welcome really makes the difference. Personally, I don't think I'll return, because a good restaurant should also offer empathetic and pleasant service, starting with the managers, who proved less friendly than the very kind waiters.

Very good food. I tried lasagna and it was delicious.

Don’t be put off by the time‑capsule interior or the slightly touristy wall of stickers. This is exactly the place to experience real generosity and tradition. It genuinely felt like eating straight from nonna’s kitchen. The polpette starters are still something I dream about, every pasta was outstanding, and even the desserts came in wonderfully generous portions. Come hungry.

Trattoria Lucana in Matera was an amazing experience. The service was perfect from start to finish, with very polite and attentive staff who made us feel truly welcome. The highlight was definitely the lasagna — one of the best I’ve had in Italy. Absolutely delicious and full of flavor. The atmosphere inside is warm and authentic, making it a great place to enjoy a relaxed meal in Matera. Highly recommended!

The restaurant was recommended to us by our host, Francesco. We ate local specialties in other places, but the food here surpasses all others. It was no coincidence that there were enough reviews from approved organizations on the door. I regret that we were only there for one evening, otherwise I would have dined until the menu was exhausted. The weather was cold, but it was heated inside. I recommend the tiramisu. Admirations for the boss and the staff.
