I went there today with some friends after a motorcycle ride. Friendly, helpful staff, excellent food, fair prices. We'll be back and definitely recommend.

*Il Grottino – Cascia*
_Michelin Guide-Style Review_
*Rating: Recommended / 5 stars
If the Michelin Guide came to Cascia, Il Grottino would be the one to keep an eye on.
*The Setting*
Tucked away in the alleys of Cascia, a stone's throw from the Sanctuary of Santa Rita, Il Grottino is what Michelin jargon would call "local cuisine with personality." Exposed stone, wooden beams, closely spaced tables. No frills, very Umbrian. Family-style service: they make you feel like a guest, not a customer.
*The Cuisine*
The key word here is _norcineria_. If you go to Il Grottino and don't order Umbrian cured meats and cheeses, you're doing it wrong. The meal starts with a wild boar platter, capocollo, pecorino with truffles, and warm crostini with livers. Everything is local, everything is explained by the staff with pride.
*Dishes to Note:*
- *Strangozzi with Norcia Black Truffle*: handmade, just the right amount of crust to hold the sauce. Generous portion, abundant truffle, and more than just "fragrance." Perfectly cooked.
- *Scottadito Lamb with Herbs*: crispy crust, pink interior, served with baked potatoes that taste of rosemary and home.
- *Castelluccio Lentils PGI*: simple, but with that buttery texture that only the plateau can provide. With a drizzle of new olive oil, they're already a meal.
- *Farro Soup*: a must in winter. Rustic, warming, balanced.
*Wine List*
Small but honest. Sagrantino di Montefalco is the star, with a few Trebbianos and Grechettos for those who prefer white. Good selection of local rosolios to finish.
*Prices*
Appetizer + first course + second course + dessert + house wine: €35-45 per person. A true Bib Gourmand value.
*Why is it worth a Michelin star?*
1. *Raw ingredients*: genuine local produce. Truffles, cured meats, legumes, all sourced within a 20km radius.
2. *Execution*: no Instagram-worthy plating, but solid technique. The pasta is hand-rolled, the meat is cooked just right.
3. *Identity*: it doesn't mimic modern cuisine. It's Cascia on the plate, unashamedly so.
*Why not?*
Service is sometimes slow when the place is full. Noisy on Saturday nights. Desserts could be improved: the torta al testo with Nutella is good, but not a guidebook.
*Michelin-style verdict*
"True Umbrian cuisine, executed with respect and generosity. Il Grottino transforms the pork butcher's tradition into a warm experience. A stop worth the detour if you're a pilgrim or truffle hunter."
If the Guide were to pass tomorrow: *1 Star or Bib Gourmand for sure*. A second star would require more precision in the desserts and a deeper cellar.

A place where you feel at home.. The food is top-notch, you can taste the authenticity of it.. Prepared with care... I had the opportunity to taste many things on the menu and everything was truly excellent... excellent and varied menu even from a gluten-free perspective... The owners are extraordinary people... Federica is her boyfriend, 2 pearls... As are all the rest of the staff.. For us it has now become a regular stop when we are in Cascia..... honest prices for the authenticity of the products, very generous portions. Super friendly.. A place where you feel at home in every aspect.... Great... very good guys.. The 3 blond sardines 😊😊

During my stay in Cascia, I decided to try Trattoria "Il Grottino da Orlando," and I must say it was one of the most pleasant experiences of the trip. The restaurant is located in the historic center, just steps from the Basilica of Santa Rita, and as soon as you enter, you immediately feel the familiar and authentic atmosphere, typical of true Umbrian trattorias.
I sampled some traditional dishes and was particularly impressed by the quality of the ingredients: generous portions, authentic flavors, and truly excellent pasta. The fettuccine with truffles and the antipasti with cured meats and cheeses definitely deserve a special mention. I also found the quality-price ratio to be very good considering the restaurant's tourist location.
The staff was friendly and helpful throughout the evening, always attentive without being intrusive. You can feel the family-run atmosphere that puts guests at ease. At times, the service was a bit slow and the restaurant was quite crowded, but that's understandable given the large influx of pilgrims and tourists who visit Cascia every day.
The ambiance is also lovely: rustic, welcoming, and steeped in history. Knowing that this trattoria continues a tradition that began almost a century ago makes everything even more special.
All in all, I would happily return to Trattoria "Il Grottino da Orlando": authentic Umbrian cuisine, a warm atmosphere, and a stop I recommend to anyone passing through Cascia.

We had lunch in this restaurant, everything was really good, we paid around 75 euros for a starter, a first course, a second course, a dessert and coffee.

Cascia, like all Italian regions, combines a thousand aspects: the mystical religious atmosphere is accompanied by the overwhelming, unspoiled nature that watches over the winding Valnerina Valley; the artistic value, with its intact and splendid medieval villages, is complemented by the pleasure of enjoying genuine, authentic cuisine, inspired by the true flavors of the region. All this can be found at "Il grottino, da Orlando": at this restaurant, the menu is inspired by typical Umbrian ingredients (truffles first and foremost), which are presented with great balance in dishes that are hard to forget. The condiments used are not preserved sauces but real truffles, carefully selected, selected, and lovingly grated. I don't want to give away too many spoilers, but I want to leave you curious to discover this truly FANTASTIC restaurant.
