Had really high hopes considering reviews and hype, but this feels like a chef trying to show off techniques rather than make great food. Food was ok at best- not worth the price, service mediocre and pushy, they failed to address my wife’s dietary restrictions even though we announced it during the reservation and arrival (pregnancy) so we had to point it out again after they served her tartare. Also, the fact that the silverware is in a drawer in your seat and I needed to get up to set my own table each time was pretty annoying. Wine pairing was bad and had nothing to do with the food we ate (the wine was good though) - overall, if you are on vacation there are better restaurants to eat at.

Excellent restaurant. Huge vino menu!!! Fantastic service and atmosphere. Food was great. A little experimental with ingredients. Gave some interesting tastes. I would 100% recommend this place and definitely go back. It’s very modern and different than anything else we tried in Rome.

Recently, we had the opportunity to visit Retro Bottega, and what a wonderful discovery! The place has a young, vibrant, and minimalist atmosphere. We chose to sit at the counter, and it was a wise choice. The spectacle of seeing each dish being carefully prepared before our eyes is simply fascinating and highlights the care and personalization of each creation. It is a true escape from the typical tourist experience in central Rome. We decided to explore the tasting menu, which offers options of 3 or 5 courses. We opted for the 5-course menu, as each portion is relatively small, allowing us to taste a variety of classic dishes with innovative touches. It was a rewarding gastronomic experience, especially because we were celebrating Lú's birthday. It's worth noting that Retro Bottega doesn't fit the stereotype of the typical Italian trattoria. Their proposal goes beyond and surprises with the quality of the dishes. Although we hadn't made a reservation in advance, we were lucky to encounter a friendly and helpful server who accommodated us after a few minutes of waiting. However, it is recommended to make a reservation to avoid surprises. In summary, I highly recommend the experience at Retro Bottega. During our 4-day stay in Rome, this was undoubtedly the best gastronomic experience we had.

Amzibg food, amazing service! Highly recommended!

A very unique experience from the very start to the end. Unexpected yet very pleasant and enlightening. We chose the 5 surprise courses menu and ended it with the Torta basca. The food was fresh, delicious and every flavour well balanced. A work of art. The only feedback I would like to provide that is not too positive but hopefully helpful… staff should know more about the ingredients and the process behind the dishes. Not easy, but for curious foodies like us would add up to the already positive experience. Possible Michelin star runners… in the very near future! Thank you for the amazing food and for making me discover the ‘animella’ : )

Il locale è davvero carino e particolare, si cena ad un tavolo sociale ma non così vicini da invadere la privacy dei commensali. Il servizio veloce e disponibile, i ragazzi sono davvero bravi a far sentire il cliente a proprio agio. Abbiamo optato per il menù degustazione da 5 portate. Buono, piatti ben eseguiti ma onestamente non eccellente. Mancano dei piccoli particolari che potrebbero rendere l'esperienza unica (per esempio manca l'amuse bouche e la piccola pasticceria a inizio e fine pasto). Prezzo alto.

What a wonderful experience. A physical journey through sexy dark narrow halls and past intimate dining bars. And then, voila, a shared table! My only complaint is that you have to scan the QR code for food and wine menus access. Our waiter was kind and informative. The food was sublime. One of our best meals in Rome, especially with cool environment and good prices!!
