We chose the 5-course tasting menu at the counter, and it was simply excellent.
The cheese pasta, in particular, stands out ! The atmosphere of the restaurant is intimate and warm, and the counter service offers an even more immersive and personal experience.
One little downside though: dessert isn’t included in the 5-course meal. It would be nice if it were mentioned upfront or maybe added to the tasting menu.
Retrobottega is undoubtedly a place I would recommend to anyone who loves refined cuisine in Rome.

The Katsusando is the best celery dish ai have had so far (including my michelin experiences too) their wine list is amazing. The food is fantastic and the music is super cool. (A little too fast but it gives the cool vibe to the place.)
Definitely this place is worth trying!

It feels like a more international metropolis than Rome. I think the city needs places like Retrobottega. Their cuisine revisits classics with very interesting contrasting combinations; you have to let yourself be carried away. The staff are always very helpful and knowledgeable. For me, going to Retrobottega is always a pleasure; I can't wait to go back!

This restaurant is truly amazing. It was so good we ended up going twice while on our trip to Italy. Such a fun change up to the classic Italian dishes you get around town. The pumpkin risotto with mussels is one of the best dishes I’ve ever had. They knock everything out of the park. I can’t wait to go back again one day.

I accidentally booked the bar the first time, but the food and service was really good and it had a nice local pub atmosphere. Our second booking in the restaurant was excellent. The food is innovative and delicious , the staff are really helpful in making wine choices. It’s definitely a restaurant to revisit.

RETROBOTTEGA offers a good selection of wines and a limited but carefully selected cuisine; it's the perfect place for an aperitif or an intimate, refined dinner.
The service is friendly and helpful.

The most amazing dinner we had in rome. Not the traditional Roman dishes but the quality and the flavors was something we will always remember. Mushroom salad was so tasty, veal sweetbreads was so bold and flavorful with amazing texture, the tortelli broth we finish it to the last drop and the secret pork was so tender and juicy. A top in our Rome list.

The essential mystery of this place is the name. In a city full of restaurants being ostentatiously old world-y, this one stands out for being very, very contemporary. Not always in sensible ways - having the entrance to a medium-sized restaurant be an unmarked passage in the back of a much smaller wine bar causes equal parts confusion and congestion. The drawer full of cutlery choices does not mix well with high tables and stools - a comfortable sitting position makes it nearly impossible to retrieve anything without standing up.
This is all outweighed by the food. It's smart, elevated takes on (mostly) Italian cuisine, with an eye to global trends but most of the focus on how to heighten flavour while maintaining balance and cohesion. While you could find the tiniest of faults here and there - the pork main was just a tad under-seasoned, for instance - several dishes were quite literally perfect. The pumpkin risotto on offer that night was one such example, with incredible depth of flavour balanced by warming spice and a perfectly al dente texture. I'm not sure I've ever tasted a better one. The mackerel starter was similarly superlative, though completely opposite in composition and flavour profile, speaking to the kitchen's versatility.
The wine list is also very good, trending towards the natural end of the spectrum which is fine by me. You may need to be assertive about preferences (the first person I discussed my choice with was great, but the second didn't actually wait to hear what I wanted before running off and grabbing a glass of something I didn't), but it's well curated and has a notably broad range of price points and styles.
All in all, many of the best bits of fine dining without some of the added overheads and nonsense. Highly recommended.
