11/08/2026: I came for dinner…
Getting there isn't exactly easy: the road is narrow and a bit challenging, but once you arrive, you're rewarded with a beautiful view of the valley and Merano.
The food is truly excellent, and the chef is brilliant. We tried some excellent canederli, the beetroot gnocchi with feta and horseradish, which were truly delicious, and the cheese-filled ravioli with chanterelle mushrooms, which were equally delicious. The mixed seafood was also very well prepared.
The wine list is good, the service is friendly and attentive, and, above all, excellent value.
If I were to return to Merano, this would definitely be a must-try. Highly recommended!
19/07/2026: This was our eighth stay at the Unterschattmair, and we are always thrilled. The view from the beautiful terrace or the balconies of the rooms is simply unique and always sets the standard when we look for accommodations in other mountain regions.
The recent renovations have been a great success, and the new infinity whirlpool (the water is drained every evening and refilled overnight for the next day) is a real bonus in the already lovely pool area.
The Waibl family are wonderful hosts and put their heart and soul into what they do, just like the lovely Marika, who has been part of the fantastic team since our first visit. Their son Matthias has also joined the team and, with his open and cheerful personality, is another great addition to the whole group.
The food is delicious every day, and I am especially pleased that my gluten intolerance is taken into account and alternatives are always prepared for me. This allows me to enjoy the food without worry – something that isn't always a given, and I therefore appreciate it immensely. We booked the classic panorama room (as in previous years) and simply feel at home there. The furniture is high-quality, the beds very comfortable, and everything is kept spotlessly clean and in perfect condition by housekeeping.
In short: My husband and I would love to vacation in other regions of South Tyrol sometime, but we just can't tear ourselves away from the Unterschattmair and will certainly be back for our ninth wonderful stay soon.
