A lunch for two in a trattoria in the center of Volterra, chosen by chance while strolling from one museum to another. The place is charming and welcoming, in the typical rustic style of the village's ancient buildings and trattorias. We chose two exceptional first courses: potato gnocchi with Chianina ragù and herb pici with crumbled crouton, followed by a terrine of vegetable soup and a terrine of stewed wild boar with olives. Both were delicious, although for the wild boar, I strongly recommended that the chef use local black olives, either salted or sun-dried, rather than the usual chemically colored pitted olives in brine.
Truly a tasteful journey through the flavors of Volterra's cuisine in a warm and harmonious setting that I highly recommend trying if you're passing through Volterra. The only drawback is that the prices are certainly a little above average, and the portions are smaller than you might expect from an osteria.

Excellent experience! Quality food, carefully crafted dishes, and excellent flavors. A huge compliment to the waiters: kind, professional, and highly knowledgeable, they explain the menu with passion and know how to offer the best recommendations. The homemade amaro was a real treat, highly recommended and told with a lovely story that makes the experience even more special. The atmosphere was pleasant and the service impeccable. Highly recommended!

Let me start by saying that whenever I return to Volterra, I'll return to Antica Taverna to give it 5 stars; a place as beautiful as all Tuscan villages manage to be, nestled in their characteristic and stunning alleys!
The vast menu with an incredible number of dishes to choose from becomes a daunting task, and that's when a living encyclopedia of the best local dishes comes to the rescue: the legendary waiter, who describes everything in great detail!
We enjoyed delicious appetizers and first courses; my only complaint is the fried zucchini flowers and sage, which should have been my highlight of the lunch, but instead was a slight disappointment due to the greasy batter.
The prices are quite high, but quality rarely comes cheap.

We're from Emilia, so you know, we're very picky about food... that said, we were extremely satisfied with the dinner we had.
Everything was truly delicious, plentiful, and made with top-quality ingredients... the waiter was extremely kind, incredibly hospitable, and very knowledgeable in explaining the dishes and providing some historical information about the area.
If we return to Volterra, we'll definitely eat at Antica Taverna again.

A typical Tuscan restaurant in the historic center of Volterra. Very courteous and helpful (and friendly) staff. The menu offers a wide variety of traditional Italian dishes, including local specialties with unique recipes (I recommend the truffle-based pasta dishes and the sweet and spicy wild boar). Excellent wine selection. The price is absolutely in line with the quality of the food and service. They even welcomed our large dog, bringing a bowl of water. Extremely satisfied. Highly recommended.
