Whenever my mother and I go to Rome, we go to this wonderful, welcoming place; the service is excellent and the dishes and desserts are superb.

If you want to eat "seriously," and immediately afterward, take a "leap into the past," you've come to the right place. You won't find anything that will disappoint. Antonio's welcome alone suggests that your scale will veer, alas, toward higher numbers. And if you then decide to finish your meal with dessert... What can I say?

If you're looking for the real Rome, the kind that exudes history, ancient alleys, and authentic cuisine, you absolutely must climb the Oppian Hill and cross the threshold of Hostaria da Nerone. Just steps from the Colosseum and the Domus Aurea, this place is more than just a simple trattoria, but a true temple of Roman tradition, where time seems to have stood still. The atmosphere is reminiscent of old taverns: warm, welcoming, and unfussy, where the service is friendly and the host welcomes you as if you were family. As soon as you sit down, you breathe in the air of "old Rome." We began the culinary experience with their legendary antipasto buffet. It's a triumph of earthy flavors: grilled vegetables, homemade pickles, flavorful cured meats, and a superb coratella with artichokes, cooked according to the age-old tradition of quinto quarto. But the true journey through the flavors of memory begins with the first courses, the cornerstones of Roman cuisine. Their Carbonara is a work of art: the egg cream is velvety and enveloping (strictly without cream!), masterfully prepared with only egg yolks and a generous sprinkling of freshly grated Pecorino Romano DOP. The guanciale is crispy on the outside and melts in the mouth, cut into thick strips that provide a perfect contrast to the rigatoni cooked al dente, "al chiodo." Their Cacio e Pepe is equally as delicious, expertly creamed, with black pepper toasted to release all its essential oils. For those who love more robust flavors, the Amatriciana offers the perfect balance between the sweetness of the San Marzano tomatoes and the savory, spicy kick of the guanciale, deglazed with white wine. Here, you eat like a Pope! Moving on to the main courses, we enter the realm of Roman Sunday feast dishes. The Abbacchio alla scottadito (grilled lamb chops) is incredibly tender, melts in the mouth, and is eaten strictly by hand, burning your fingers as the name suggests. A special mention goes to the Coda alla Vaccinara (Coda alla Vaccinara): the meat is so tender it falls off the bone ("si strappaccia"), immersed in a thick, dark, and fragrant sauce, enriched with that ancient touch of bitter cocoa and celery that cleanses the mouth. It's the perfect dish for mopping up the sauce with homemade bread. For a side dish, the Puntarelle (Italian greens) with a sauce of fresh anchovy, garlic, and vinegar are a must: crunchy, bitter, and refreshing, they cleanse the palate divinely. To end on a sweet note, we indulged in a house classic: a slice of ricotta and sour cherry tart, with its crumbly shortcrust pastry encasing a soft sheep's milk ricotta and the tart contrast of wild cherries. It was all washed down with an excellent foglietta (the classic quartino) of Frascati Superiore, the wine of the Castelli Romani that goes down with pleasure.

Pizzeria Sancho

11/05/2026: A small but very casual place: you order at the counter and, if there's a spot, sit at the tables. We ordered practically everything from the counter... and it was all spectacular. Phenomenal pizza by the slice, light and crispy, with top-quality ingredients. The one that impressed me the most was the amatriciana: I could have easily eaten two more pans. We also had a "frittatina" with truffle, cacio e pepe... it was so good, it was simply illegal. The staff was incredibly friendly. If you're passing through Fiumicino, stopping at Sancio is practically a must.
11/05/2026: Simply the best pizza in the world. It's hard to convey in words how good it is and how carefully selected the ingredients are to create pizzas that will blow your mind. Potato-crusted porchetta (THE ORIGINAL), chicken salad, breaded steak...not to mention the exceptional fried foods. If you've never been to Sancho's, you've never had pizza.
