The pizza was okay. The service was overwhelmed; there was only one waitress for a full outdoor seating area.

The service was excellent – very friendly, and the drinks and food arrived promptly. The restroom was very clean. The food (salad, pizzoccheri, and pizza quattro stagioni) was also delicious. At €10 each, it was absolutely worth it.

A regular stop for a coffee break, conveniently located near the stations with plenty of shaded tables.
They also serve food, but I've never eaten here.

Valtellina platter with a view of snow-capped mountains, in the cool and shaded summer garden. An ideal refreshment point for those waiting for their Bernina Express tour, as the station is right next door.

I was returning from St. Moritz and until the train to Milan arrived I made a stop in Tirano. I wanted to get a coffee and happened to sit in the shop. Friendly service, delicious pastry and good coffee.

My girlfriend and I were traveling to Livigno for an Olympic event and found ourselves in a stressful situation in Tirano. We had checked out of our hotel that morning and booked luggage storage at another café near the station. When we arrived at 7:00am, it was closed - no warning, no backup plan and suddenly we were scrambling with suitcases and a train departure fast approaching.
We tried nearby hotels and other cafés. No one could help. With time running out and options disappearing, we walked into Cafè de la Gare with very little hope left.
What happened next is something we will never forget.
The owners immediately listened to our situation and, without hesitation, offered to store our luggage in their café for the day. No complications. No suspicion. Just kindness. We told them we would return by 4:00pm but due to heavy Olympic traffic getting back from Livigno, we didn’t arrive until 5:00pm.
They were already closed.
And they stayed anyway.
They waited for us, unsure if we would make it back in time, simply to make sure we had our bags and could continue our journey. That level of generosity, especially for two travelers they had just met is rare. In a moment that could have derailed our entire day, they stepped in and helped us without expecting anything in return.
Beyond their kindness, the café itself is fantastic. We had stopped in the day before heading out and enjoyed excellent espresso and fresh pastries while taking in the mountain views near the station. The coffee is authentic, the pastries are delicious, and the atmosphere feels warm and welcoming.
But what truly sets this place apart is the people.
Travel has a way of testing you, tight schedules, missed connections, unexpected stress. And every once in a while, you’re reminded just how good people can be. The owners of Caffè de la Gare were that reminder for us.
If you’re passing through Tirano, please stop in. Order an espresso. Enjoy a pastry. Strike up a conversation. Support this café because places like this, and people like them, are what make travel meaningful.
We are forever grateful.
