Ape Wine Bar In Alba

The food and wine were definitely a fantastic experience. Unfortunately, there are many things I don't like, but I still managed to find something I enjoyed. It's definitely worth a visit.

Ape, Alba: A Report from the Table of the Converted Word reaches me of a dinner in Alba that deserves recording, at a restaurant called Ape, where — by all accounts — the packed room seemed to know something the rest of the city hadn’t yet learned. The evening opened with an Orlando Abrigo “Trés Plus,” a Chardonnay-Arneis blend from the Langhe, poured with such generosity of texture that it reportedly drew the attention of the birds outside — an unlikely audience, but a discerning one. What followed was less a wine list than an escalation: a Mauro Veglio Barolo 2021, then a La Spinetta Barbaresco Bordini 2023, arriving in sequence like a sommelier’s own crescendo, each glass distilling the Nebbiolo grape into something closer to perfume than to wine — fragrance first, then flavor, then the slow, inevitable work of digestion. The kitchen, for its part, did not defer to the cellar. A vitello tonnato substantial enough to feed a table of four opened the meal, followed by local lamb of real distinction, then a spaghetti dressed with seafood that read as confident rather than showy. Dessert — a baba au rhum draped in fresh cream and coffee gelato — closed things on a note somewhere between indulgence and inevitability. If there is a single instruction worth passing along from this table to the next, it is this: find the sommelier, and let him talk. Excellent restaurant in the center of Alba. Remarkable value for money for a Michelin-starred establishment. Attentive and friendly service. Beautiful cuisine from the chef, who hails from Puglia. The sommelier is top-notch!

A stylish restaurant with excellent cuisine; particularly noteworthy are the generous and very tasty vegetables served with the main courses, which is not a given in Italy. The head waitress and the wait staff are very friendly and highly competent. You just have to be careful with the manager. For example, he charges a service fee (apparently only to foreigners) that is not on the menu, and employs strange sales methods. An experience with him: my husband and I were dining there with Italian friends. When we ordered dessert, the waitress asked us if we wanted a dessert wine. We had already had enough wine with our meal and, moreover, do not like sweet wines, so we declined. Then the manager came to our table; he had a wonderful new Spumante, and asked if we wouldn't like to taste it. We declined again. Then, while we were eating dessert, he came with a bottle and glasses; we absolutely had to taste this wine, and he simply poured us two glasses, one for each couple. We thought he probably hoped we would buy a bottle. We only tasted a sip and did not find the wine interesting. To our surprise, we subsequently found this wine, which had been forced upon us, on the bill. Tip: do not accept unwanted extras before the bill is paid. How you wish to deal with the illegal service charge listed on the bill without prior notice is up to you to decide. We, as foreigners living in Italy and regular guests, did not used to have to pay this; now they seem to have opted for a general surcharge for foreigners, which has dampened our enthusiasm for this restaurant. We find this general discrimination against foreigners particularly surprising, as the manager (a Mexican) is also a foreigner himself. If the surcharge were announced and required by everyone, we would have no problem with it.

This place shattered the cliché that "restaurants overlooking tourist areas are bad." We ordered Black Angus beef and pliny. A Russian salad was served as an appetizer. It was good. Our food was perfectly cooked and tasted great. They also offered complimentary dessert with our coffee. We left very satisfied. Thank you. 😊
