Entering Forno Santa Caterina isn't just about buying bread or focaccia, it's about taking a journey back in time.
As soon as I stepped inside, I was overwhelmed by an authentic atmosphere that immediately took me back to my childhood. I felt like I was back in the old wood-fired oven that my grandmother would light every Saturday night to make pizzas for the whole family. In an instant, I relived the same aromas of tomatoes, onions, and freshly baked dough that filled the air and made every weekend special.
The emotion was even stronger when I saw the two elderly ladies sitting outside making orecchiette by hand. A scene from another era, capable of taking me back to when my grandmother would cook on Saturdays and Sundays for all of us grandchildren, and eleven of us would gather around the same table, sharing lunch and moments that today are precious memories.
We purchased Altamura bread, focaccia, and orecchiette: all excellent quality products, authentic and rich in flavor, made with full respect for tradition. You can sense the passion and expertise passed down through generations.
The prices are absolutely reasonable, considering it's one of the most well-known and popular historic bakeries among tourists, but the quality of the products and the experience are well worth the visit.
If you're passing through Altamura, stop by. You'll not only take home excellent bread, but also a small piece of history and tradition you'll never forget.

If you find yourself in Altamura I definitely recommend stopping by this ancient bakery to taste their focaccias and maybe buy some bread. There is also the possibility of getting a drink and sitting at the tables or benches in front of the bakery. We have tasted various focaccias and they are fantastic, as is the bread we bought. The prices are excellent value for money.

Run, don’t walk to this incredible little gem.
We booked the Bread Experience, which was absolutely incredible. We met the owner around 10:30am and went to the town’s oldest cheese maker to see how mozzarella is made, and had some cheese tasting. Then he gave us a walking tour of Altamura. We also stopped for some espresso and the two most representative desserts here. Finally we got to the bakery and made focaccia, the Altamura and Matera breads with master baker Giacinto with Palma translating for us. Then we got to make orecchiette with the Nonnas, and finally had a great local lunch (and they were able to accommodate my husband who is vegan).
Really great experience, I highly recommend it! It felt very immersive and being welcomed into an Italian bakery with open arms. We did many experiences in Puglia and this was the best!
