Al Bajniero, Via Gastone Maspero, Ostia Antica, Rome From March20-on the Covid-19 pandemic that impacted Italy (and the entire world) brought a measure of realization of just how quickly existing social networks that had once seemed so reliable/firm could quickly become fragile and no longer available. The issue becomes one of making an effort to get out, to explore, to share and to enjoy. Reflections of this kind took us back to Rome in 2022 when the planes began to fly again. and also for the current year. We tend to enjoy the familiar and, in both cases, we made a point of returning to the Al Bajniero Restaurant to recapture the pleasure of the venue, foods and services with local friends whom we have known over many years. You could say much the same about Mine Host Roberto (and his son too); the memories of those earlier times and places. It’s the way things frequently work out with friendly communities - local restaurant and local clientele - except that the hotel next door also provides a regular stream of international diners to Al Bajniero. The restaurant is next to the Ostia Antica Park Hotel – a popular venue for the passing tourist trade with cars and coaches parked outside and/or a stop/over for those arriving from or travelling to Fiumicino Airport 10 km away. Check out the >300 TripAdvisor reviews of which 20% are foreign travellers; note the emphasis upon the high quality of the foods, the value for money and the excellent services provided. On the other side of the restaurant, away from the hotel, is a quiet residential area of modern Ostia Antica. Further away there’s farmland that extends all the way to the Tevere river. As we’ve said before (and this is our fourth review of Al Bajniero - and the first post-Covid-19) it is the traditional Italian cuisine that attracts. Evenings following the heat of the day spending time/eating in spacious open-air restaurants is an opportunity not to be missed – taking full advantage of the summer climate at its best in Rome. Dining al fresco in the large courtyard outside the Al Bajniero is not to be missed whether you’re a first-time visitor or you’ve been many times before. There is little enough traffic on the Via Gastone Maspero outside but, in any case, the courtyard has a high brick wall along the roadside – neither parked cars nor those travelling on the road are visible from the courtyard. The restaurant is quiet – romantic even with the fairy lights strung from the trees around. We ordered drinks – sometimes an occasional beer or more frequently, una caraffa di vino rosso della casa o/e acqua frizzante to share with the table whilst exploring the menu. Menu or not, most people in our group tend to eat the same preferred meals from week to week. Mine was a spaghetti alle vongole. Others order pizze, insalate o frutti di mare alternativi – calamari, gamberi, pesce alla griglia, ecc. Sometimes a preferred choice is not available – and the cameriere will suggest an alternative. Again, typically, most people tend to pass on the dolce – antipaste are usually preferred - sitting over the last of the drinks before heading inside to pay at the cassa. And, if there’s a couple of slices of pizza remaining after the meal, there’s the porta via option and a light lunch the following day. The costs of meals at the Al Banjiero are always competitive. In fact, we ate our evening meal twice at the Al Bajniero during August this year and, each time, we paid E30 for the pair of us – food and drinks – which represented excellent value. In summary then. Service is always good - with the cameriere greeting/exchanging/bantering/etc. with the group at the table when hovering over the menu, delivering meals and removing plates; providing a constant dialogue that comes from knowing his/her clients over many years. Food was delicious and full of flavour - just the right kind that reminds you why simple Italian cuisine of this kind has travelled the world.
