If you have taste and desire to escape the banality of mass tourism, Vicolo Cieco is the perfect place in Matera to do so. A charming decor in a small cave in the Sassi of this splendid city, with simple, local food, albeit within the confines of a small kitchen's menu, offering a limited selection, as should be the case with proper guest service. The jewel in the crown is the young owner, who with graceful decision-making welcomes guests with warmth and no frills. Generous portions and prices lower than those now rampant in the mass tourism scene provide a prestigious backdrop to the quality of the culinary offerings. A youthful restaurant, it would be interesting to visit on weekends for the pace it can impose on young patrons, where even those who are no longer young can find their rightful emotional space with a good sip of the fine wine of this splendid city and its surrounding area. If you're in Matera, avoid the many "usual restaurants" and enjoy an evening at Vicolo Cieco! Thanks to the owner for her hospitality and the complimentary gin! PS: A plate of Lucanian cheeses, a rich and tasty salad, and a traditional cold dish, washed down with three glasses of wine (white, rosé, and red), plus a bottle of water, totaled less than €50. Complimentary gin. Generous portions. What more could you ask for?

A great little restaurant with great sandwiches. You can sit outside or inside. There's nice music playing, and the service is very friendly.
