A high-end restaurant located in a historic 16th-century building. Beneath the building are the historic cellars of Tenuta Squarcialupi, where Chianti is still aged today: these fascinating and evocative spaces are open to visitors. The restaurant offers a traditional Tuscan menu, expertly revisited by chef Francesco Costagli. The pasta is carefully prepared by chef Alessio Perna, a true master. The service is attentive, friendly, and, dare I say, impeccable. A truly exceptional culinary experience: I highly recommend lunch or dinner here. Special praise goes to the owner, Mauro Maestrini, a true master of the art. The entire team, from the kitchen to the dining room, deserves praise for their professionalism and dedication. An experience worth repeating... the only risk: it can be addictive! 😊

We had (or we thought we have a reservation in another restaurant), but it turned out to be closed. Trying to find a place nearby without reservation and last minute, we bumped into this place which was full mainly with locals, but also few tourists like us. We were lucky they could find us a table and we enjoyed fantastic food. Atmosphere and service are also very good. Highly recommend it!

Chianti region !! Spectacular view from the outdoor patio. Be sure to visit the attached wine store ... and visit to the cellar. It's well worth it!!

15/06/2026: This was the most delicious meal I’ve had since coming to Italy. At 72 euros for 1.2 kilograms of steak, I think it’s great value for money, even considering prices in Korea. That’s because it was so delicious and the quality was excellent. It’s not the kind of taste that gets cloying! It is truly one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. And the pasta was also the best fit for Korean palates, haha. The staff kept checking to see if the food was okay, and before grilling, they even brought out the meat to show us which cut they were going to use! I feel great that we had such a pleasant experience on our honeymoon! If I come to Pienza again, I will definitely come back here!!!!!

20/05/2026: We went to this restaurant with friends for the second time on Sunday, May 17, 2026. We had a truly wonderful meal. Excellent food. Very friendly staff. Fair prices. I highly recommend it.
19/05/2026: Osteria il re gallo is the loveliest restaurant you will find at Castellina in Chianti. The restaurant is located on the main piazza. They are a little hidden gem as they are small but they will steal you heart away. They have a wonderful menu full of traditional dishes with Fiorentin touches. Their wine is excellent and they have impeccable service. The zucchini risotto and their charcuterie is exquisite. Also their parmigiana is incredible!!! The atmosphere is cozy and the value for money is very good. In the toilet, they even have toothbrushes, sanitary material at disposal and they allow dogs. Truly a restaurant to stop by in Castellina. I highly recommend for a family or a date dinner.
