Truly beautiful... the ruins leave room for the imagination, partially surrounded by vineyards and a splendid view!

Due to its strategic position between Italy and Central Europe, Valtellina has been a land of castles and fortifications for centuries. Castello de Piro al Grumello, known as Castel Grumello, is one of these: its name derives from the rocky knoll on which it stands, nicknamed "the lump." Its construction was begun between the late 13th and early 14th centuries by the Ghibelline Corrado de Piro, who moved with his family to the valley after the conflicts between Milan and Como. The de Piro family, however, experienced a rapid decline and by the mid-14th century were forced to sell the manor to the rival Capitanei family. After various vicissitudes, in 1526 the building was destroyed by the Grey Leagues, like many other Valtellina fortresses, and fell into ruin. Donated to the FAI in 1990 by the Fedital company, the castle has been restored and has been open to the public since 2001, offering the opportunity to relive the valley's medieval history and admire one of the most evocative views of the Alps. Worth a visit if you're in the area; parking is near the entrance and admission is free. Congratulations to the FAI.

Nice 14th century historical and archaeological site combined with spectacular views of the Adda Valley. Someone spent a fair bit of money restoring the ruins, and there is some evidence of ongoing maintenance. Well worth a stop if you like uncrowded ruins (and don't mind narrow hill-hugging roads). Quite a bit to see. Decent explanatory panels in Italian and English. There's also a restaurant immediately next to site.

Not much to see. An old, now abandoned castle restored by the FAI (Italian National Trust) for visits. There is no guide. Entrance is by donation (minimum €2). Opening hours: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

For those coming from out of town, it's a shame not to have it within reach! A word of advice... look for it and let your GPS guide you. It's worth it! In summer, the outdoor pergola at the foot of the castle is a sight to behold. The food? Describing the flavors is like adding pears and bananas... you have to try it, because only by tasting can you form a true opinion.

Ristorante Bellavista Teglio

02/06/2026: It's easy to say "Pizzoccheri"... and when you try Elisa's, you'll feel like you've never eaten them before! There's no need to waste words, just try them! Her restaurant is a must-see, and a stay at her hotel is also highly recommended. If you find yourself in Teglio (a gem of Valtellina) and the surrounding area, don't miss this opportunity! You'll be welcomed by simplicity, tradition, excellent cuisine, and a wonderful sense of family. Maria, Elisa's mother, won't hesitate to offer you the produce from her garden... herbs for the summer version of pizzoccheri, strawberries, and cherries, to name just a few. The bresaola is also excellent, with sciatt, also handmade, of course... and what can I say about the Tzigoiner (meat on a stick)... sublime! Regarding the hotel, I'd recommend the welcoming, spacious, and clean rooms. Spectacular views of the Orobie Alps can be seen from the balconies of the rooms overlooking the mountains and from the restaurant's outdoor terrace. Teglio offers walks and easy hikes (e.g., a visit to the charming Menaglio Mill is a must-see) and is an excellent base for reaching Tirano and the Bernina Express to Saint Moritz, Livigno, Bormio, and its thermal baths. The Sanctuary of the Madonna di Tirano is a must-see, with its 14-meter organ with over 2,000 pipes, one of the most majestic in Europe and truly breathtaking. In Teglio, Palazzo Besta is definitely worth a visit. Enjoy your stay at Elisa's, the heart of tradition in the capital of pizzoccheri.
31/05/2026: This chalet-style hotel boasts a great location (the upper rooms also offer a splendid view of the Orobie Alps), private parking, and excellent cuisine. The pizzoccheri are sublime. I've never tasted so good and so plentiful. Unmissable.
