Lucca is a lively, elegant, generous and gastronomic little town! In particular Chez Giglio, for this tart vegetable puff pastry between land and sea!

What a disappointment. We arrived a quarter of an hour late, it's true, parking in Lucca is always a mess, but before giving us the table and leaving the one as a support for eventualities, which among other things wasn't even decorated for Christmas like the others, they could wait or call. I tried calling several times to let them know but no one answered. For the rest, the wine list (in tablet format!!) was delivered to us when the starter was already on the table, the same goes for the cutlery, there are grammatical errors in the menu (in the first courses section and on the last page) and ok the waiters in t-shirts but at least give them the same to everyone. We tasted 5 courses, the starter with livers and brioche bread was interesting, while in the risotto the reduction completely covered the other flavors while the other first course, the coarse sauce and pasta were completely unrelated to each other. For the chicken with truffle the same thing as the risotto, the reduction covered the other flavours. Good dessert but nothing special. Final price €236, €70 for wine and €166 for dinner.

La prima volta che ci sono andato erano in attesa di ricevere la stella Michelin. Atmosfera rilassata, tutti molto gentili e cordiali. Molta attenzione e cura a spiegare e consigliare. Mangiato benissimo scegliendo il loro menu. Personale sempre disponibile a guidarci nelle scelte. Alla fine abbiamo pagato un conto, giusto, intorno a 70 €. Ci siamo tornati a Stella ottenuta. L' atmosfera in sala era la stessa ma il menù profondamente cambiato. Risentiva molto dell:esperienza giapponese fatta da uno dei cuochi. Abbiamo deciso che non faceva più per noi. Quest'anno, dopo aver letto che avevano rinunciato alla Stella perche' volevano offrire e vivere esperienze più vicine ai loro clienti, soprattutto locali, abbiamo voluto tornarci. Ambiente sempre caldo e accogliente. Un po' piu' di confusione in sala, soprattutto da parte del personale. Nel menù si fa fatica a capire che esiste un menù suggerito dagli chef. Il personale che accoglie e quello che serve ai tavoli e' cordiale e sorridente. Ci si sente finalmente come la prima volta. Poi arriva la persona che prende le ordinazioni. E' decisamente imbronciato, ha un fare sostenuto e poco propositivo. Non sorride mai ne' guarda mai il cliente. Peccato ! A questo si unisce il fatto che sembra non ci sia nessuno del personale, che in sala e' anche troppo, attento a eventuali richieste dai tavoli. Un gran movimento ma organizzazione da rivedere. E' come ci fossero "lavori in corso" e dovessero ridefinire i ruoli. Comunque un esperienza piacevole. Abbiamo mangiato molto bene ma siamo usciti, a differenza della prima volta col rimpianto di non aver potuto assaggiare altro pagando lo stesso conto (70€). In sintesi alcuni consigli affettuosi. Rivedete il menù valorizzando quella che e' la vostra proposta del giorno. Magari anche quello dei dolci. Ma soprattutto la fase delle ordinazioni ( qualche sorriso, attenzione e parola in più non guasterebbero).

Si mangia bene ma non si può perdonare la distrazione degli camerieri. L’ambiente un po’ confusionario ma ben frequentato

In the step from starred to normal (intelligent) I hope for more truth: a more attentive and familiar (slightly impersonal) service, menus laid out with care and rigor and not 'wannabe chic' (I found the use of the G logos as in Bottura's Gucci bad taste) but with broken edges. We will be back, the food and the context are well deserved.

The restaurant deserves 3 stars for the research of the dishes and their quality, for the rest there are some shortcomings that cannot be found in a restaurant like this. Despite the kindness of the dining room staff in recommending and explaining wines & dishes to us, they forgot to bring us water to the table (among other things, they themselves proposed it) and no spoons were brought with the coffee: once requested we was told that unfortunately they were finished, at most we could have one. In a restaurant of this type and given the quite salty bill I don't think it's acceptable, among other things the next table calmly received the spoons shortly after.

Intrigued by the choice to give up the star, I wanted to try this restaurant, ultimately remaining perplexed. I chose the tasting menu for 60 euros which with a glass of wine (12 euros???) and a bottle of water became 75. The revisitation of the liver crostini was interesting, the risotto with parmesan was decent, the chicken with truffle was so-so . Of course, nothing negative but not even strong and decisive flavors that deserve more than three stars. A small disappointment given the expectations.

07/07/2024: Really good seafood restaurant once you get to understand the menu and the tech, and indeed the booking credentials, but restaurant staff did not seem to want to engage, to speak any English, or at least did not want to trust their English, were not lighthearted in their approach to us, and rightly or wrongly that made us feel a tad unwelcome. Also, the booking process was odd. Booked in to the restaurant by our hotel next door, at first it was, "Oh well we only have a table for you in the courtyardoutside", (it had been raining), or maybe they they were not keen on us nor English in general? Clapton fans had just left and roadies for the next concert were 'teambuilding' over dinner all over the place, so maybe their nerves were on edge. The QR code provided to cope with the translation of the menu to English (and presumeably other languages) proved a problem: Reception of internet, bad eyesight, bad lighting, and a menu which turned out to be a menu devoid of specials was difficult to understand. I understand it is my fault for not understanding Italian and several other languages in the world, though I do have a few, but the menu seemed incomprehensible to me, and selection was made more difficult by shy service. There were clearly specials but could not understand what was offered, so that old adage, "I don't understand everything on the menu, but there is something on the menu I do understand so I'll just go for that!" was in play. This turned out to be a great shame, as it was my birthday treat, they knew that, but I then had to sit and watch my (in my head) magnificent lobster 'market special' waft past me on its way to someone else, I was understandably cheesed off. The table was laid up nicely, clean cutlery, good wine, comfy surrounding....in the main restaurant where they eventually put us, and service was reasonable, if distant. I might go back, but I would take my time understanding ev-er-y-thing on the menu, ask questions, and make sure I did not feel rushed. So good food, Nice restaurant, but no cigar.
06/06/2024: This pleasant fish restaurant is located outside the old walled city of Lucca, well within walking distance of the old town. It is advisable to book as it is popular with locals, business travellers, groups and tourists alike, and initially they could only offer us an outside table. We booked through our hotel and they made a good choice for us as we only had to slip next door after a long day travelling. Not knowing much Italian, I found the menu a bit difficult to understand. My fault for failing to learn basic Italian 🇮🇹 . A QR code was supplied to translate the basic menu to English, but that is only helpful if you are ok with tech. Eventually, our waitress came to take the order, and though we still could not completely understand everything, I heard the word seabass, my husband heard the word tuna and we were ok. The fish was lovely! (Though I might have chosen the lobster/prawn special which floated by to someone else had I known it was available). More accurate translation required please? Lovely food. We will go back now we understand the system better.

08/10/2024: I returned after some time to eat here, the place was as wonderful as I remembered and the food was excellent as always. Delicious polenta with mushrooms..homemade tagliolini always with mushrooms harvested at km 0..tender and tasty sliced ​​and fried mushrooms.....friendly and qualified service..thanks Michela.
