Off the beaten tourist track, nestled in the elegant tranquility of the Flaminio neighborhood, Hostaria Lo Sgobbone (affectionately known to longtime patrons as "Pippo's" creature) represents a true journey back in time. In an era when Rome's restaurant scene is increasingly succumbing to the lure of modernism and forced reinterpretations, this establishment stands as the guardian of a gastronomic memory we thought lost, establishing itself as an authentic bastion of Roman home cooking. The setting evokes the atmosphere of the 1970s with disarming honesty. The intimate rooms, free from ephemeral design, are imbued with a conviviality from another era, where closely spaced tables foster the typical chatter of Sunday family lunches. There's no room for show: aesthetics over substance reigns supreme here, an ideal refuge for the gourmet seeking authentic flavor and the discreet charm of Rome's bygone days, far from the theaters of the historic center. The service is imbued with that "Roman savoir faire" that combines proud, down-to-earth dignity with genuine familiarity. Managed with a firm and warm approach by the women of the family, the staff welcomes guests without the affectations of hotel dining, but rather with the spontaneity of old-fashioned innkeepers. Often, the menu gives way to oral narration of the day's specials: a frank approach, free of flattery, that immediately establishes a pact of trust based on respect for the ingredients and the diner. The culinary offerings reveal themselves to be a triumph of pure tradition, executed with a homely touch that enhances flavor without ever becoming overly heavy. The first courses are a testament to balance, featuring traditional pasta shapes topped with timeless sauces. It's in the main courses, however, that the greatest devotion to Lazio cuisine is expressed. The Saltimbocca alla Romana is masterful in its delicacy: perfectly tender slices of veal, where the savory flavor of the pork tenderloin blends with the aromatic notes of sage in a velvety, seamless sauce. Also worthy of honor are the seasonal side dishes and homemade pastas, which evoke the aromas of Roman Sundays of old. Finally, the house dessert is sumptuous, prepared according to the canons of the most authentic home-cooked tradition. Ultimately, Hostaria Lo Sgobbone doesn't seek avant-garde critical acclaim or inclusion in glossy guides. Its value lies in its proud and honest assertion of a culinary identity that places human warmth and philological respect for traditional recipes at its core. A precious address for anyone wishing to rediscover what it means, in the most noble and popular sense, to sit at the table Roman style.

Excellent Roman trattoria between the Teatro Olimpico and Piazza Mancini, with a good selection of vegetarian and vegan options. There were 10 of us, and we ate generous (and especially delicious) appetizers consisting of prosciutto crudo, buffalo mozzarella bites, pecorino cheese, grilled and mushroom-style eggplant, seasoned olives, and puntarelle with anchovies. Some of us had a first course, others a second course, plus side dishes and dessert, some of which were not all, plus wine and water. We ended up spending €40 per person. I personally had the fabulous strozzapreti alla puttanesca; my wife was also absolutely delighted with her tagliolini with tomato and basil. We'll be back!!!

Pecorino

12/05/2026: This restaurant made me feel right at home in Rome. The female owner and servers were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and they all had a distinctly Italian sense of humor. TLDR: You absolutely must try this place in Rome! All the pasta dishes are delicious, and I highly recommend the appetizer Parma ham with Jewish-style atichoke. This restaurant was recommended by the manager of our accommodation. On our first day, we ordered what I believe to be their signature carbonara, rigatoni all’ amatricana, Roman-style veal brisket, and an octopus and artichoke salad. I wasn't feeling too well that day, but I still finished everything (because it was so delicious and I didn't want to waste any). The owner even treated us to gelato (it wasn't included in the bill, but after we told her, she said, "Dessert on me!" 🫶) Since we were only staying in Rome for two days, one reason was that we didn't want to end our trip with disappointing food, and the second reason was that we couldn't forget this restaurant. The next day, the owner and the waiter from the previous day remembered us. This time, we ordered a different pasta dish – Fettuccine alla gricia (it had fava beans, but it was delicious), Parma ham with artichoke as an appetizer, a steak, and pudding for dessert. 🍮 I hadn't tried artichokes much in Taiwan; they're supposedly a signature dish in Rome, and I've heard they're very nutritious. Personally, I liked the taste. The restaurant had a very homey atmosphere, and you could tell it was a popular spot for locals. The waiters and owner were very welcoming yet polite. While the reason I remember it so fondly is that I didn't have a satisfactory pasta meal during my trip to Italy, the experience from the moment I entered until I left was unforgettable. It was the best food I had in Italy, but the experience offered was definitely more than just delicious food. I hope you'll have the same experience when you dine here.
10/05/2026: Perfect lunch! I've never had better Jewish-style artichokes, and even the wedges were special! The pasta was perfectly cooked, not to mention the flavor. Between the cacio e pepe, amatriciana, and maltagliati with artichokes, I couldn't choose the best. The tripe was made just like my grandmother used to make. We were speechless. The staff was very kind and helpful! We'll definitely be back!!
