L'Altana In Barga

This ended up being my favorite dinner of our entire trip to Tuscany. The staff was incredible and genuinely accommodating. I even called from the U.S. to make our reservation. I tried my best Italian, they met me with their English, and somehow we understood each other perfectly. This is clearly a place the locals adore, and it was evident the moment we walked in. I’m pretty sure we were the only tourists there, which made us love it even more. The menu was surprisingly available in English, though not everything made complete sense but that was part of the charm. Our server did a phenomenal job guiding us through the menu and offering thoughtful recommendations. The pasta dishes were exquisite. My husband decided to be adventurous and ordered a mushroom pasta (despite hating mushrooms) and ended up absolutely loving it. My ravioli with sage was unforgettable. I still think about it. I can’t quite pinpoint what makes Ristorante L’Altana so special. It’s a simple restaurant, nothing overly fancy, yet there was something about the food, the ambiance, and the beauty in its simplicity that made it stand out as the highlight of our trip.

The maltagliati were excellent, but the tagliata was very salty, I couldn't finish it.

Delicious food, friendly staff and very fast service

We were greeted at opening, without a reservation, and were immediately served bread and the menu. The menu is simple, just the way we like it: a few dishes, but well-made. We had excellent homemade truffle macaroni and chicken liver, with a side of leek flan. Everything was delicious! The waiters were kind and attentive. We'll be back! Dogs are welcome. Whisky appreciated the bowl of water!

L’Altana has a special place in my heart and my stomach having first visited well over a decade ago and making sure it’s frequently visited on every trip to Barga. In my opinion there are 2-3 amazing places to eat in Barga and L’Altana wins…it’s unassuming, understated and almost invisible as you walk through the old town…but don’t be fooled. Inside this modest restaurant (some choose to sit outside) is a family lounge, a space you would visit with best friends and a place you could visit with loved ones - whilst being equally welcome on your own! The menu is simple but underpinned by the common principles of fresh, local and amazing! Must have eaten here 30+ times and not once have I been disappointed- not once! The staff will say no, they may turn you away on sight of an empty table but this ensure they deliver perfection time and time again- so do t assume you know better as they have been running this masterpiece for ages and doing so brilliantly! Best to book ahead to make sure you are not disappointed!

The calf's liver with onions, the orecchiete with sausages, the truffle maccheroni—everything was delicious. Authentic cuisine. A place to treasure.

We had a truly wonderful time: exquisite cuisine, friendly staff, and a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere in the historic center. Generous portions. Excellent value.

Excellent food! Two reviews, one vegetarian and one non-vegetarian :) 1. Good vegetarian selection, including the dishes I ordered: macaroni with spinach, ricotta, and hazelnut pesto, bean and cabbage soup (special!), and pappa al pomodoro. 2. I (an omnivore) had liver with onions, so good I even ate the lemon that accompanied it ❤️ The apple pie with ice cream was also very good, and it was also nice to be able to get a bottle of good wine, but only 375 ml, perfect for sharing between two!

Looking forward to returning soon. Pranzo was delicious.
