Had a wonderful experience at Dal Bolognese Rome! The food was delicious, the atmosphere was fantastic, and the staff were so kind. We didn’t have a reservation, but they still found us a table. Everything was perfect — totally recommend!

In the evening, Piazza del Popolo empties of its daytime crowds and takes on a more intimate feel. Il Bolognese has been here since 1961, on the corner of the square and Via della Fontanella di Borghese, which overlooks the heart of the square. The sign is discreet, almost shy for a restaurant that has spanned sixty years of Roman history, but it is precisely this sobriety that defines its character.
You enter and the atmosphere is that of a restaurant that knows what it is: linen tablecloths, upholstered chairs, a warmth emanating from dark wood and soft lighting. There is no pursuit of contemporaneity or ostentatious nostalgia, just the solidity of an environment that has found its balance. And maintains it. The room is modest, creating a sense of intimacy rare for such a central location.
The service welcomes you with the formal courtesy typical of the old Roman school, one that doesn't confuse kindness with familiarity.
The cuisine is clear from its name: Bolognese, but with several Roman influences that testify to the decades spent in the capital. The menu offers Emilian classics, faithfully and respectfully executed. The tortellini in brodo arrive with a clear, fragrant base, where the pasta holds its shape while cooking and the filling melts, releasing its own flavor without overpowering that of the broth itself. It's a dish that thrives on minimal balance, and here those balances are respected.
The tagliatelle with ragù demonstrate the same attention: the pasta is rolled out with a rolling pin, porous enough to hold the sauce, and the ragù is constructed with a long cooking process that loosens the meat, leaving a soft consistency that's never dry or greasy.
The second courses follow tradition with the same seriousness. The portions are generous but never excessive, calibrated to satisfy rather than to indulge.
It's a cuisine that seeks not to amaze but to please through the perfect execution of familiar preparations.
The wine list isn't extensive, but it's well-constructed, with labels that complement the cuisine. The dining room staff offers expert advice, suggesting sensible pairings without being forced. Prices are in line with the location and the quality of the bottles available.
The piazza outside the windows becomes the backdrop to the evening, especially if you choose a table facing the outside. It's not the view that makes the experience, but the connection between inside and outside contributes to the feeling of being in the heart of Rome without being subjected to its chaos.
The positioning is high-end, consistent with the location and the overall offering.
The Bolognese is a rare example of continuity in the Roman restaurant scene. The professional service is part of a now rare dining room culture, an environment capable of making the diner feel hosted rather than served. Here, the surprise lies not in innovation but in the confirmation that certain things, when done well, need nothing else.

The Bolognese pasta was very good.
The Caprese salad was incredibly basic, with no effort put into it: half a tomato with four slices of mozzarella.
The service, however, leaves much to be desired unless you're American and order five bottles of wine. Customers are clearly not treated equally, which is rather disappointing and unjustified.

A historic, very elegant restaurant in one of the most beautiful squares in the world, where you can feel the high life.
Attentive and professional service.
And unfortunately, that's it.
The food has become very poor: poorly fried gnocco, dry and flavorless Milanese cutlet, and awful crème caramel.
Not recommended if you want to eat well.

Dal Bolognese is a classic Roman establishment, long known as a gathering place for those who appreciate tradition, style and elegance. Frequented by Roman high society, and international visitors, it exudes an unmistakable and wonderful aura of La Dolce Vita lifestyle,
The traditional menu is undeniably appealing and sets high expectations. Unfortunately, the culinary execution often falls short of what one might hope for in such a storied setting.
Yet, despite this, the timeless atmosphere, professional attentive service with the vibrant energy continue to draw us back. It’s a place where the La Dolce Vita experience keeps us coming back.

Restaurant located next to Piazza del Popolo. The steep slope is a bit steep. The service is attentive but slow. The Italian specialty dishes are well-prepared and flavorful.
