We were guests at this restaurant for the evening of the dress rehearsal. A welcoming place full of memories of a Siena that no longer exists... Horses, jockeys, and so many Contrada residents. Service exceeded expectations! Friendly, knowledgeable, and very friendly. Despite a difficult situation due to bad weather, they managed to get us inside in two seconds. Good quality food with generous portions. I would recommend everything, especially their crostini neri. The price is in line with the quality, quantity, location, and service. I will definitely be back; I'm curious about the Florentine steak! Highly recommended.

Very good food, characteristic atmosphere and perfect service

We passed by La Taverna del Capitano late at night as it was very near our Airbnb. It seemed like primarily Italians eating there - our primary objective when traveling (eating where the locals do) - so we stopped and made a reservation for the next night. The next morning, I started reading reviews - I don’t believe I have ever read more reviews of a restaurant before going to it than this one. And with every bad review I read, I wanted to go there more. First off, the owner, Niccolo seems to respond to every review. That in itself is impressive. But his responses to the negative reviews are what made me realize he stands for excellence in all regards - not just creating exceptional food, but standing for excellence in service and mutual respect for and treatment of others too. Niccolo is clearly a master of his craft. I too live and work in a service industry focused on excellence, and I know the feeling when laypeople don’t trust the masters of their craft. Let the experts do their craft, people - you’ll be happier in the end. Anyway, I relayed several of the bad reviews with my family, including Niccolo’s responses, and it was unanimous that we wanted to go there despite the fear of being non-Italian speaking tourists that might get yelled at for some reason. All 4 of us were also prepared to order an appetizer, first, and second course because of the reviewers who said they got yelled at for not ordering enough. And here’s what happened: -The host greeted us with the most courteous and friendly response of any host ever. She displayed no concern or irritation by our inability to speak Italian whatsoever and was incredibly nice. She sat us immediately. -Niccolo himself took our order and he too was one of the most kind, informative, and generous restaurateurs we’ve ever encountered. He offered suggestions, he asked what we liked to help guide us, he told stories of his dishes and his father, and he offered we try his special house wine before ordering a full decanter or different bottle - it was simply an amazing experience and the most friendly, personal interchange. -After all 4 of us ordered our appetizers and first courses, Niccolo left, not taking an order for our second courses. While we didn’t discuss it and he didn’t explain, I’m convinced he did that because the appetizers we ordered were huge portions and there is no way any of us could have eaten more than what we ordered. I believe he knew we had ordered enough food and there was no need for more. -Nevertheless, we did order dessert. -When we paid and left, once again the host was incredibly courteous, nice, and talkative, and Niccolo thanked us and said goodbye. Everything we had was incredible. One-of-a-kind delicious. I grew up eating chicken livers and his were the best I’ve ever had. His award-winning pappardelle with hare was obvious why it was award winning. The tagliatelle ragout - just amazing. The desserts? Incredible. All of it. And the service was as kind and friendly as it gets. In fact, we were hoping to take a photo with Niccolo, but we regretfully didn’t ask. This is a long review, I know. And I don’t leave many reviews. But when I do, I want them to count. And in this case, I have to say, my guess is that in all these cases where people have issues with this restaurant, its owner, or its staff, the problem is likely not the restaurant, its owner, or its staff. Thank you Niccolo for an amazing dinner and an amazing experience on the streets of your beautiful city. You are a master of your craft in all regards.

Well situated close to the Duomo in Siena it offers a wider range of local foods. The price- quality relation is somehow ok but on top comes an 4,50 euro extra fee per person, the so-called "coperto". To take this additional fee for laying the table is absolutely legal but is has to be mentioned on the menü list, visible for the customer what this restaurant doesn't do. We wanted to discuss this with the waiter/owner when he got absolutely out of control telling us to go back to our (ugly word) country and no to come back to Italy. Being in vacation in Italy for many times this has been the crown of uncivelised behaviour. I got a reply from the owner : Translated by Google) You told two falsehoods. First, the cover charge is €3, not €4.50. Second, the cover charge is clearly stated at the end of the menu. Thank you I am shortly replying to this: First it is absolutely irrelevant that you have the service charge mentioned somewhere in the corner on the last page of your menu card because nobody is searching for it. Additionally we didn't even use the menu card because we made the order from the listing on a board outside the restaurant and there the extra charge was guaranteed not mentioned. Secondly, we payed 4,50/person on top of the price for the meal. If the coperto is 3 euros as you say the additional 1.50 must have come from the SodaStream carbonized tap-water or the dry with olive oil overfatted bread. Both should be included in the service charge. But even taken this out of consideration. Absolutely nothing Sir justifies your uncivelised and filthy behaviour. Thank you.

The place is amazing and must go to, the restaurants is a fresh change with amazing service and devotion. as well as reasonably priced tasty food, delicious appetizers. even the owner himself is involved with the costumers. can't recommend enough.

I ate at Taverna del Capitano for a bachelor party. Everyone was satisfied with the traditional dishes cooked to perfection. The service was friendly and welcoming, yet professional.

I ate Ossobuco here for the first time in 2024. It was so delicious that I'm back in 2026 😎

Mistakes are unfortunate because they can happen to anyone, but it's the attitude that makes the difference... If the "Captain" avoids greeting you even from a few centimeters away when his staff has made mistakes, then it's a symptom of an arrogance that makes him "Uber alles" just because he won a TV show. The appetizer was good (eggplant tart on a pepper base, which I'm fond of), nothing special, but worth mopping up the sauce. The first course was good (pappardella with hare ragù, brought back for a pleasant memory of a previous meal), also worth mopping up the sauce. Unfortunately, there was a mistake when ordering, which resulted in something else being served (and it was noted on the bill that it wasn't added to the bill... The second course (Chianti-style beef stew) was presented as melt-in-the-mouth, easily removable with a fork, but instead it was hard and dry, and sent back (I was told I was unlucky to have the "culetto" (small portion), but the slices were also hard and dry), and not added to the bill. The dessert was presented as a classic tiramisu recipe, but with a strong presence of cream, and they regretted not being able to use the Pavesini biscuits that my grandmother used to use.... Ah...
