Al Poeta In Sagrado

Trattoria Al Poeta; sometimes first impressions can give you clues, and for me, it was excellent. It feels like stepping back in time to when trattorias were rural establishments with pergolas and trees providing shade for diners' tables. All that was missing was the red-and-white checked tablecloth, but the place would have been like something out of a movie. We stopped for lunch at a table of artillerymen for the national gathering held in mid-June. The menu isn't very long and consists of three or four appetizers, three or four first courses, and three or four second courses with side dishes. In my experience, a short menu means eating well and freshly prepared food, and this belief was confirmed here as well. We started with two cheese and cured meat platters; to say they were divine would be an understatement. For the first course, I opted for the eggplant parmigiana (not a local dish, but I love it), which was also up to par with the appetizers. For the second course, the luganega (I think that's the name) was spectacular. To accompany the meal, of course, there was a very good beer. The staff were very friendly and helpful (despite the border location and Austrian background), and I believe it's family-run. I highly recommend it. Unfortunately, given the distance, I can't return anytime soon, but if I'm ever in the area again, I'll definitely stop by. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Rustic place, delicious food, much higher quality than you might expect. The service isn't slow, but relaxed, as it should be in a place like this.

A good, understated trattoria with a few dishes but well-executed, especially the Ljubljanska, which is truly delicious. Unfortunately, only a couple of dishes are suitable for celiacs, but still better than nothing. Dogs are welcome.
