There are experiences that go beyond simply "eating well." At Ristorante Vitantonio Lombardo in Matera, I experienced something truly extraordinary.
The dish I will cherish forever is the risotto with truffle, salted caramel, and Amaro Lucano cream: a perfect balance of sweet, savory, and aromatic, an explosion of flavor that I would unhesitatingly call the best dish I've ever eaten in my life.
Making everything even more special was Donato's kindness and impeccable attention in the dining room, making you feel like you were at the center of a complete sensory experience. Through the glass separating the kitchen from the dining room, I glimpsed a close-knit team, smiling, orderly, and impeccably clean: silence, precision, harmony—almost a dance that contributed to the truly magical atmosphere.
The restaurant, carved into the Matera tuff rock, is an architectural spectacle: intimate, elegant, and authentic. Every detail exudes passion and respect for the land that hosts it.
Donato's wine selection is an exciting journey through Basilicata and Europe, with perfect pairings that enhance each dish, showcasing the finest ingredients and creativity.
An experience to be relived and re-lived many times in a lifetime, because in places like this, time stands still, and taste becomes pure emotion. We'll definitely be back!

What a treasure in Matera. Beautiful delicious food, pretty setting, friendly and attentive service. Great value, too. Loved the wine pairings and the concept of being able to assemble your own tasting menu. Chef is in the kitchen himself. The Michelin star is well deserved.

A restaurant with an exceptional location, inside a Matera sassi, with a relaxed atmosphere and a kitchen where, unlike many other Michelin-starred restaurants, there were only three people working, one of them the chef. This, however, didn't affect the pace of service. The staff was charming, attentive, and professional. And the food? We were pleasantly surprised that we could design our menu by choosing from all the dishes on the menu (although all diners received the same number and type of dishes, except for desserts, when they let us each choose a different one). We had the seven-course menu, and for my wife, it was even too much for a dinner. The portions were very generous and the dishes hearty. There were some light and dark aspects to the cuisine, but overall, it was good. We loved the meat dishes (especially the tartar with nduja). Of the rest, I would highlight the orecchiete, the egg from the garden, and the fish (although I must admit I expected more depth from the olive crust). The rest weren't bad, perhaps just a little bland, with nothing that stood out or gave them the punch you expect from dishes on a tasting menu. My wife, however, loved the experience of the dessert, "L'ultimo Bicio." We would have appreciated being given a printed menu at the end. It's always a nice memory.

I'm sorry I can't give more than 3 stars, but it didn't meet my expectations. Several dishes weren't to my liking, some flavors too unique to be appreciated. The atmosphere is nice but didn't impress me. The service was good but not particularly outstanding. Overall, I really expected more.

My wife and I went on a Sunday in February. The restaurant is well-maintained, the staff are very knowledgeable and well-prepared. The dishes are truly remarkable: the carbonara and the black pizza—in short, a feast and an explosion of flavor. The seven-course menu is perfect. The dessert is very good.

The real star of the restaurant, in my opinion, is the manager: Donato.
Knowledgeable, kind, sociable, fun, and never intrusive.
Tasty, complex, and well-crafted dishes. Fast and accurate service.
The only negative: in my opinion, the prices are above average (compared to 1-star restaurants), undoubtedly due to the cost of the location—which, however, is certainly very beautiful and evocative.
