My goodness, how delicious! The king of fried cod is in Rome!
So, I'm telling you with all my heart: if you come to Rome and don't stop by this hole-in-the-wall place in Campo de' Fiori, you're only half listening to the song of this city. Don't expect a fancy restaurant with dressed-up waitresses and plates that look like paintings, eh? No, no. This is about true tradition, the kind that makes your mustache curl. The place is simple, just how we Romans like it. No frills, wooden tables, paper placemats, and off you go. There's always a crazy racket, and you often have to wait in line in the alley, but I assure you, the wait is part of the experience. You grab a cold drink or a quart of Castelli wine while you wait, chat with your neighbor, and the evening gets off to a great start. The air is that of Rome back then.
But let's get to the point, the cod fillet, which is a true masterpiece. The batter is miraculous: crispy, crunchy with every bite, dry, golden, and without a drop of excess grease. And inside, the cod is thick, white as snow, soft, melts in your mouth, and perfectly salted—you could eat loads of it. In addition to the fillet, we paired it with puntarelle with anchovies, fresh and crispy with that sweet and sour sauce that clears your mouth before the next bite of fried food, as well as mixed fried vegetables with zucchini and zucchini flowers, made to perfection, and finally, bread and butter with anchovies, whose simplicity makes you feel like a child again.
The waiters run around, brisk but always with a smile and a quick joke in Roman, capable of making you feel at home within five minutes. The prices are affordable and very fair for the quality, especially considering it's right in the heart of Rome's historic center. In short, if you want the authentic Rome—the flavorful, greasy, and happy one—you have to come here. I leave my heart there every time; it's a pure spectacle. A perfect score, with a kiss from the Academy, and I'll definitely be back!
