If you're looking for a slice of Sicily in Trieste, Taverna Montalbano is an excellent choice. The atmosphere is typical of old-fashioned trattorias, where substance matters more than form. The spaghetti with clams was fresh and flavorful, but the real highlight was the fettuccine with shrimp and pistachios. The only area that could be improved is the thermal comfort during the winter: unfortunately, many customers forget to leave the front door open when entering or leaving, allowing cold drafts to bleed through, which can be quite annoying for those eating nearby. Overall, it's still a very positive experience that I recommend to anyone seeking well-crafted, passionate Southern cuisine.

Very nice taverna, with excellent food and service. The staff was really friendly, the food was really good. I would recommend visiting, and trying the scallops for starter they are great!

Despite the late hour and the lack of a reservation, we quickly found a table for two. The wait times were reasonable, as explained on the menu, and consistent with the food preparation. The dishes were standard, and you could taste the quality of the product. The bill was fair, and the staff was friendly and helpful.

My husband and I were there on December 30th (2025). We had a table reservation (luckily, otherwise it would have been difficult to find a free one), and the staff was wonderful. As we well knew, they were very kind and helpful. We had the famous spaghetti with sardines, orecchiette with swordfish, tomatoes, and eggplant, and two Sicilian-style tuna dishes (super delicious). The dishes were carefully prepared, with generous portions typical of southern Italy! ❤️ It's worth mopping up the bread with your finger food! :) Finally, we chose the house limoncello, a great way to end this exquisite dinner. What can I say... we ate wonderfully! Don't miss this little restaurant if you want to eat well, Sicilian style. TOP people and place! 🏆👏🏼👏🏼

Entering the restaurant, you find exactly what you'd expect from a true tavern: from the furnishings to the tablecloths, from the seating to the layout, everything evokes tradition and is curated with great taste and consistency. The atmosphere is extremely pleasant, alternating ancient architectural elements with more modern details, creating a harmonious balance. The warm, inviting lighting contributes to the intimate and convivial atmosphere, further enhanced during the Christmas season by decorations that lend even more warmth and charm. Every detail immediately conveys a sense of familiarity and authenticity. The welcome is simply amazing. Mr. Sebastiano, along with his family and the entire staff, welcomed us with a sincere and natural warmth, making us feel as if we were longtime guests. More than dining in a restaurant, you truly feel at home, in a family tavern where the guest is at the center. After dinner, we also had the pleasure of engaging in a long, pleasant conversation with the owner, aided by my partner's connection to Mr. Sebastiano's hometown: a spontaneous and authentic moment, like meeting old friends. The cuisine fully reflects the restaurant's name and exceeds expectations. We enjoyed typical Sicilian dishes that gave my partner, a native of that region, a strong and pleasant feeling of home. The dishes are excellent in every way: generous, carefully presented, rich in flavor and authentic flavors. This cuisine celebrates tradition, with generous dishes as expected from a true tavern, yet prepared with great attention to the quality of the ingredients. Despite the abundance, the meal is balanced: you leave the table feeling full and fully satisfied, but without feeling heavy. The wine selection is also excellent, with typical local labels of excellent quality, perfectly pairing the dishes and enhancing the sense of a journey through the flavors and aromas of Sicily. The service is quick, efficient, and always kind, attentive, and discreet. I was hesitant to eat Sicilian food in Trieste, but I had to change my mind. I had a really good pasta with Sardinian sauce. After all, the owners are Sicilian through and through!

A corner of Sicily and the Mediterranean in the heart of Trieste. The atmosphere is welcoming, and it's a pleasure to sample dishes reminiscent of those prepared by grandparents or some other creative relative, while chatting with Mrs. Carolina. I stayed at the trattoria for over two hours, chatting and tasting.

Everything was delicious: the exquisite swordfish roll, the caponata, the orecchiette, the spicy Sicilian mussels, the ricotta on top of the cannoli... I'll definitely be back. Fair prices and a family atmosphere.
