A very rare place, without rubbish. Everywhere else in Sicily is full of mountains of decaying garbage. This nature reserve offers a respite from the trash. Well maintained.

The Vendicari Reserve is one of Sicily's most successful and best-preserved natural landscapes, where nature, archaeology, and productive history coexist without constraint. Lagoons, beaches, dunes, and Mediterranean scrub create a diverse and easily accessible environment, accessible only on foot, at a slow and respectful pace. The reserve's value lies in its balance: no spectacularization, minimal infrastructure, and clear but unobtrusive paths. The presence of wildlife, especially migratory birds, is discreet but constant, making the experience ever-changing depending on the season. The remains of the tuna fishery and historic settlements add depth to the landscape, without turning it into a theme park. It's a place that works because it doesn't seek to entertain, but rather to be explored and observed.

Relaxing place immersed in protected nature

The Vendicari tuna fishery is a natural oasis not to be missed if you're visiting Sicily's inland coast. It's stunning both in winter and summer, with Mediterranean scrub and the occasional pink flamingo.

Visited in October for a walk. You can walk for hours along the trails to some beaches designated for swimming. It's important to understand that you're in a nature reserve and as such must be respected and experienced with the right spirit. Enter as a guest and on tiptoe.
