It is the best-known abbey in the Milan area, founded in the 12th century by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, a Cistercian monk of French origin.
Due to its historical and religious importance, its architectural characteristics and the works of art it contains, it is impossible to assign less than five stars.
But it must also be said that the abbey is quite poorly maintained and requires restoration work that can no longer be postponed.
The frescoes in the dome and transept are in mediocre condition.
Some fragments of plaster have even fallen to the ground and it is clear that the roof of the church has water infiltrations and needs urgent interventions, without which the frescoes would be irremediably lost.
I didn't expect to find the abbey in these conditions.
The access criteria on Saturdays and Sundays also appear to be criticisable, with costs for guided tours perhaps excessive.
Having said that, it is a church of great importance which contains various works of art and which deserves to be known and visited.
I especially liked the stupendous tower and some of the frescoes, of remarkable workmanship.

This is where I like to return when I desire silence and peace. The Abbey speaks for itself and the Vettabbia park in front acts as a backdrop. Luckily the nearby stadium is a failed project that has migrated elsewhere and this is a huge relief for the preservation of this timeless place

A stone's throw from Piazzale Corvetto, the abbey can be reached on foot via the Vettabbia park or in 5 minutes by bus

My visits to this abbey are very frequent. It is a place where, as if by magic, it is possible, for a while, to escape from the chaos of the city. Apart from the mystical atmosphere of the abbey itself, I gladly pay a visit to the monks' shop where connoisseurs of beers will find a wide choice. The same goes for natural, naturopathic and food products. An unmissable stop!

An enchanting and magical place that is part of the great artistic and cultural heritage of the city of Milan. Founded in 1135 and consecrated in 1221, it is perhaps the most important monastic complex in Italy, easily reachable by car or public transport; the abbey deserves the attention of Milanese citizens and tourists in general, for a visit that will give them pleasure and satisfaction. Worth visiting. !!!

Chiaravalle Abbey is a magical place because as well as remaining a place of worship, it is open for artistic guided tours and amazes with its architectural beauty, exceptional works of painting and sculpture. Abbey was included in the cycle of free guided tours "Christmas in the villages" organized by the Municipality of Milan. Detailed information on my Instagram: ItaliaMilano_blog

🔔⛪️🛐 Abbey still active. The main church is magnificient (even if some of the frescos are begging for reparations). I had the privilege to be there when cistercense monks did their pray in latin La Sesta and this was truly intense.
It is possible to visit also the internal garden (Chiostro) where you will have spectacular view of the tower.
Plenty of parkings, a small monks’s shop and some good restaurants in the area.
You can visit calmly in 2 hours.
