A quiet spot for families looking for a walk. The refuge offers homemade dishes, but I didn't have the chance to try them. It's a lovely sight to see the farmyard animals, goats, and donkeys roaming freely without fear of onlookers. They're well-cared for and healthy. Kudos to those who let them roam free and to passersby who respect them.

If you're a nature lover looking to escape the scorching heat, Alto Matanna is the place for you! At over 1,000 meters above sea level, in a natural basin filled with beautiful conifers, you'll find a unique refuge/agriturismo, offering a bar, restaurant, and hotel services, as well as direct sales of food products (vegetables, eggs, cheeses, and cured meats). Run by polite and helpful staff, the facility also offers outdoor bathrooms (very rustic but functional) and outdoor spaces for dining or self-prepared snacks. A true delight for children, in addition to various rides, are the animals, raised in pens but often left free on the plateau: you may encounter chickens, geese, sheep, goats, donkeys, and, not infrequently, even cows and horses. All things considered, the refuge is a beautiful, multipurpose space, accessible in a variety of ways: for refreshments along the Apuan Alps trails (which pass here and there in abundance, towards Mounts Matanna, Prana, Piglione, Procinto, Gabberi—just to name a few), for an overnight stay, or, for those less accustomed to trekking, simply for a bite to eat and a bit of relaxation in the shade of the fir trees, perhaps even walking to the nearby Foce del Pallone and enjoying a spectacular view of the entire Versilia coast, stretching from Livorno to La Spezia. Living in the municipality of Pescaglia, my wife and I can reach Alto Matanna in an hour's drive whenever we want, and the experience... rejuvenates mind and body every time!

A lovely outing for a hot summer day. The hut is shady and offers plenty of space for the children to play. We saw most of the animals in their enclosures. The free-roaming horses are lovely.
We took a short walk (about 20 minutes) with the children (ages 7, 5, and 1.5) to the Foce del Pallone. There you have a beautiful view all the way to the sea.
Even though the place is somewhat poorly maintained in places, I can recommend it. We had a lot of fun.

Refuge with bar and restaurant.
Indoor and outdoor seating, playground equipment for children and animals.
Helpful and friendly staff.
The food is good; the only drawback is that the selection of cakes is too limited; let's say a jam tart would be a must in a refuge.
