An excellent culinary experience, with all the ingredients selected from local organic suppliers. The first courses are handmade with fresh pasta, and the meats are carefully selected and top-quality.
With a keen eye for quality, Chef Andrea Funi welcomes you at the entrance and explains the menu with great skill and passion.
Prices are average, but the food is fantastic—a must-try!

This place was amazing. It had a really nice terrace where you could enjoy your meal. The food was really tasty and the service very good. I recommend trying Mr. Andreas amazing homemade Syrah wine. The whole staff was very friendly and Mr. Andreas came out and talked with everyone. This place is definitely worth a visit if you are nearby.

This is an amazing restaurant you must try in Bologna. I visited my Italian friend and he took me to there. The food was spectacular. Additionally chef and staff were so nice and kind. The owner was also very friendly and he explained the concept and history of the restaurant. When I said I came from Japan, he also explained some of the decorations and lamps were designed by the Japanese artist, so proud my people doing a good work in Italy 😆 to get here you need a car. If I come Bologna next time, I’m renting a car if I have to, so I can come here!!
They also mentioned that the menu changes every 2-3 weeks

Two relaxing days between August 18th and 19th. Once the destinations and location were chosen, all that was left was choosing the restaurant. I browsed Tripadvisor to read reviews of the area, visited the website, and then made my choice: Antica Trattoria La Grotta!
I can honestly say it was the best dinner of my summer vacation. I was satisfied, full, and truly enjoyed everything from appetizer to dessert, without feeling tired or heavy.
I appreciated Chef Funi's kindness, passion, and preparation.
The location: that evening, we all dined on the terrace.
Read the menu carefully, paying particular attention to the preface, where you can see the care taken in selecting the ingredients.

I returned a couple of weeks later to confirm the excellent impression I had the first time. I rediscovered the pleasure of high-quality ingredients crafted with skill and passion, but above all, Chef Funi and his entire team were able to give me further levels of delight, offering me a delicate, flavorful, and enveloping braised donkey like I've rarely tasted!
The chicken could be improved; it was a little below expectations.
Once again, Antica Trattoria La Grotta deserved a round of sincere applause from me and the entire family, as evidenced by the composed and satisfied silence that accompanied the tasting of each course.

My husband and I are in Emilia-Romagna on vacation from America. We found Trattoria La Grotta dal 1918 on the Michelin guide, and also received a recommendation to come here from a local chef. Even before we made a reservation, Chef Funi communicated with us via WhatsApp, as my husband and I both have dietary restrictions. He was very thorough with his discussion of the food and assured us that he could accommodate our allergies. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were welcomed by Chef Funi, who described the menu of the day and his kitchen philosophy in detail. It is clear that Chef Funi has a deep love and passion for cooking and a dedication to his kitchen. Everything is thought out and intentional. Only local products. Only seasonal products. We have eaten at some of the world’s best restaurants, including three star restaurants, and never have we experienced the degree of passion and hands-on care that Chef Funi provides. It is one thing to be exacting in your menu and service, but Chef Funi also made us feel that we were long time friends. Every guest was treated this way, like they matter, and that he deeply values their opinion.
Obviously, what matters most in a restaurant is the food itself. Chef Funi’s menu changes often, based on seasonal and available products. For antipasti, we had a special aged prosciutto platter, and polenta with truffles. My husband then had a pasta with wild boar ragu, and I had a mushroom pasta using a very limited/rare mushroom evidently only available in May in this region. For our second course, we had pork with asparagus topping, grilled vegetables, and radicchio salad. For dessert we had a sorbet and bombaletto. Chef Funi also produces a small selection of wines exclusively for the restaurant. We had his Lambrusco.
All of our dishes were fantastic. The quality of the products sang, and the dishes were balanced and light. The experience is like an elevated home cooked meal with chef training. We enjoyed his food so much that we unfortunately did not take any photos. When we return to the Bologna/Modena area, we will definitely come back and see what Chef Funi has on his menu that day.
