Candles, twinkle lights, and great steak. The food was amazing, with great house wine and friendly staff. We started with wine and went right into the steak. The waiter explained our options and even brought the steak out before it was cooked. The balsamic was excellent. Loved the presentation of the steak. Cheesecake was very good. Great place to have a Tuscan steak.

This restaurant received a low-key recommendation from the hotel we were staying in. It wasn’t a full-throated “You must try it” more of an “It’s OK” kind of thing. Please note: this is not to say that Il Paiolo was bad - it is certainly not but it’s also not really our kind of place - allow me to elaborate.
Words such as “traditional” crop up in reviews but what does that mean? Traditional as in wicker Chianti-flasks, photographs of Old Napoli, waiters carrying huge pepper grinders, etc? I know I sound awful but they are not “traditions” - but cliches. The ambience cliche also applies to the menu, which makes a big deal out of the totally “non-cliche” Florentine love of meat (and the Florentine steak to be precise). It’s a treat for some and good luck to you if you do order this meaty favourite. But my appetite diminishes just looking at the damned things in the restaurant window - never mind eating one.
However, being a meat focused menu, it would have been downright churlish not to have meat main courses. My wife had her favourite, (but a specialty of Milan), Ossobucco. It came with buttered rice, rather than the more traditional risotto Milanese but my wife loved every mouthful. Absolutely first class and braised to perfection with the meat literally falling from the bone, (that contained lots of delicious bone-marrow). Sadly, my veal chop was a little tough - far too tough to be honest.
Our starters were both a little hit and miss. The Caprese salad came with prosciutto, which was a first for us but I never complain about getting prosciutto with anything. My starter of lasagne was very tasty but suffered because of its preparation. Obviously, the kitchen made a number of individual portions, to be reheated later - perfectly acceptable. However the pasta had disintegrated into the meat and bechamel sauces, making it almost like a thick soup. It could only be eaten with a spoon.
Service was totally excellent and the atmosphere was really buzzing. There were Italian families in there as well as the usual glut of tourists (such as ourselves). Prices were reasonable for Florence and all in all it couldn’t be described as bad but we did have better during our week in Florence.
