Ristorante Barbieri In Altomonte

A gem of quiet elegance on a rugged mountain top. Understated and accommodating. This was a perfect stop for me driving from southern Italy to Rome. The waiter in the excellent dining room watched me devour my dinner pasta. Seeing there was only a taste of sauce left on the bottom of my plate, he said, “Would you like a little piece of bread to soak up that last bit of sauce.” What a thoughtful gesture!

I was more than disappointed with the room and the bathroom. Only the view was good. The bathroom is getting older. It should have been renovated 20 years ago. The shower measures 60x60 cm. Unacceptable. And the kitchen also has major deficiencies, despite a Michelin recommendation. I have never eaten such bad and tough lamb chops. And they were recommended to me too. Really not a nice experience.

Andando in giro per il centro storico siamo entrati in un negozio di souvenir molto particolare con oggetti tutti lavorati a mano. Tra le varie informazioni ci ha detto di non perdere l’esperienza gastronomica di questo eccellente locale. Aveva proprio ragione! Cibi a chilometro zero cucinati in modo superbo, locale elegante e curato, perfino piatti personalizzati, servizio accurato seguito dagli stessi proprietari, vino eccellente prodotto da loro. Ho saccheggiato la loro bottega! C’è anche l’hotel con una bella piscina perciò torneremo per un soggiorno. E’ stato il luogo più bello della mia settimana calabrese alla ricerca di luoghi storici

We found ourselves by chance near Altomonte due to a road emergency. Beautiful structure. Very friendly and helpful staff. I would like to truly thank all the staff with whom we interacted. In particular I would like to say hello and wish the best to the gentleman who came to pick us up with the shuttle, a great person. Surely if we find ourselves in the area we will stop by even just for lunch or dinner at the starred restaurant.

What can I say, I have known the Barbieri hotel for half a century, the professionalism, kindness and helpfulness of the owners is known throughout the world and I am not exaggerating. It is located in the heart of Altomonte, a medieval village, nestled between the Pollino and the Ionian sea . I haven't been in this location for a few years, I found some transformations to offer the best in the field of gastronomy. The Barbieri farm, certified organic, produces products made with genuine and natural ingredients, following the peasant traditions of our ancestors. With my family, we spent a fabulous day, in a beautiful setting in the pool area and a large gazebo where the whole lunch took place. A series of tastings, where you could smell the scents of the garden, of first courses that in my eighty years I had never tasted I want to thank Mr. Michele, the owner's son, who did not leave us a single minute, all the staff and the person very dear to me, Mr. Enzo, who we have known each other since 1974.
