To visit the church you must purchase a ticket. As the time of writing there were two options to chose from: Full ticket, so you could visit the 4 different attractions in the city center, including San Matteo and San Gregorio VII churches. All sites can be visited in less than two hours and that's an overestimation. The other ticket option is a two-attraction ticket, which as the name suggests, allows you to visit two churches of your choice. The tickets were (full price) 12€ and 8€ respectively.
If you want to choose only two, I'd recommend the Duomo di Santa Maria degli Angeli and San Gregorio VII. They are just stunning! However, the star of the show here is San Matteo crypt. I went in completely clueless and had one heck of a surprise when I entered the room. Nothing can prepare you for its beauty and the sheer complexion of the adornments and decorations this crypt holds.

While the cathedral was a bit disappointing, the crypt turned out to be very impressive. A real must-see in Salerno! Definitely worth the money.

The Cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria degli Angeli, San Matteo, and San Gregorio VII, whose remains it houses, is unexpectedly beautiful and exudes a sense of devotion and peace within.

It's a shame it was closed on Easter Sunday!! A lot of people out there and the door closed!! Maybe next time.

A very impressive cathedral, not to say it's importance of hosting St. Mathew in there. It is a must visit even if you are not a christian if you are in the city or nearby.
Fortunately when we visited, everybody else were crowding Amalfi so we could enjoy it in silence and calm :).
At first we though it hosted some local saint (Mathew) not the one of the twelve apostles of Jesus... The crypt is also very nice painted and decorated.

Beautiful church with multiple inspirations from the time of the Norman kings (11th century).

A monumental building with a highly original architecture that combines Romanesque elements with others from Byzantine, Norman, and other traditions. Its porticoed courtyard is no less monumental, and also offers a display of sculptures and even an inscription left by an Armenian pilgrim from the Middle Ages.

The Cathedral Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Angels, Saint Matthew and Saint Gregory VII is the full name of the cathedral. It was founded by Robert Guiscard as an exact copy of the cathedral in Montecassino. In 1081, the relics of the Apostle Matthew were placed in the crypt of the cathedral. In 1084, the cathedral was consecrated by Pope Gregory VII, although at that time the cathedral was not yet completed. When decorating the interior of the cathedral with mosaics, the masters used the Cosmatesco style. I recommend visiting the crypt in particular. I visited during my stay in Salerno in 2022.
