Papille Cafè Bistrot In Matera

03/12/2023: Recommended by apartment manager. Empty at 7:30 when they opened (better rated places near our apartment were booked up). Nice cave environment, English spoken, helpful, frriendly staff. Good wine list by the bottle, not so much by the glass. The primi’s were great, we had one Bavette in cheese sauce that was outstanding, Orchiette with turnip tops was also very good (basically bitter greens – local specialty). Secundi’s were not as good. I had sausage with mushrooms and tomatoes. Sauce was tasty, but the sausage was like plain ground pork, not much flavor. Wife had Pork medalions in potato foam. Bland. Nothing bad with either dish, just bland. Dessert was as good as the primi’s – puff pastry with crème. Heavenly light pastry with great flavor and a sugar crunch, the crème was almost unnecessary. Delish! They were pretty busy by the time we left at 9:30 – oh, and we saw a marriage proposal/or re-proposal at the table next to us, which was cool.
