A very unique and charming place carved into the rock. Excellent food. Average prices, more than good value. Recommended.

We were visiting Matera in Nov. 2025 and found this place on Google. One dish in particular caught our eye - A giant ball of burrata cheese with cherry tomatoes, olive oil an arugala all housed in a pizza dough bowl. It was probably the best "appetizer" we've ever had, although it is like a meal unto itself. The service staff were friendly and the rest of the food was quite good. We went twice to have the burrata again and to try the pizza which was really good. Definitely recommend!

We ate at Al Casale our last night in Matera. It was recommended by our hotel, and it was a great recommendation. The food and service were excellent. They have a wonderful wine list with knowledgeable servers who helped us pick a very good local wine. We started with the beef carpaccio, then shared the truffle raviolis, and finished sharing the veal cheeks. A friend once told me that if “cheeks” of any kind are ever on the menu, order it. We have always heeded this advice. The veal cheeks amazing, as were all our dishes. This place is amazing! When in Matera, I would highly recommend both Al Casale and La Talpa. Enjoy!!

The best restaurant I've been to in Matera. Great food—the octopus is top-notch—fast and efficient service with excellent English, and above all, delicious dishes at an even better price. I wish I'd found it right away... A must-see in Matera.

21/10/2025: The pizza was very good. The dough was fantastic, springy and well-baked. Pressing the edges returned it to its original shape. The toppings were fresh and perfectly combined. As far as pizza goes, this is the only one out there.
21/10/2025: Simply the BEST carbonara I've ever had! The sauce was creamy and flavorful, and the bacon was crispy even though it was mixed in. The servers were all very friendly and good-natured. My only complaint is the couvert, which I didn't realize was included and cost us an unexpected 7 euros.

L'antico Molino

25/10/2025: I went there for a graduation party one fall evening. The place was very nice inside, and it looked nice outside too, but it was raining, so we didn't go out. Good food and good service, nothing to complain about.
12/10/2025: I travel frequently for work from Sardinia to the Valdera area. And I absolutely cannot miss this irresistible encounter with the Antico Molino. Every time I enter this wonderful Tuscan farmhouse, meticulously cared for down to the smallest detail, every time I'm greeted by the owners with hospitality that is nothing short of familiar, and every time I sample each of their dishes, both on and off the menu, I feel like I'm living in a book of poetry. And every time I compare this restaurant to the many others I frequent, I realize that it's only here that I feel the immense desire to return. Well done! If it were possible, I'd give you 10 stars.
