Cool atmosphere, friendly service, good drinks. A bit pricey.

One of those classic, elegant Bolognese cafés that feels both refined and comfortably familiar. Gran Bar in Bologna is a total jewel. A stylish, traditional Italian café with a slightly upscale atmosphere. It has that characteristic Bologna charm: bright, clean interiors, a long polished counter, and attentive baristas who move quickly even during the busiest hours. It’s the kind of place where you see a mix of professionals grabbing a quick espresso, locals enjoying a quiet cappuccino with a pastry, and people stopping by for an aperitivo. I would definitely recommend booking in advance in the evening. They have an amazing selection of wine and bubbles, and every once in a while organise events where one can enjoy these wonderful bottles in great company! Always a pleasure!

A no frills bar right in the middle of Bologna. Very good drinks and a great place to people watch. Had a couple of aperitif before going out to eat and would definitely return.

A stylish, bustling café near Piazza Maggiore that hits the sweet spot between local and visitor. Outdoor tables go fast, but sitting inside is even better for people-watching. Warm service, a sweet waiter who spoke Italian with me, and fresh, simple food (gnocco fritto with ricotta, stuffed zucchini). Bonus: someone thought I was French or Spanish, not American. Would recommend, would return.

If you're looking for an aperitivo spot near the historic center, you've come to the right place. Importantly, there's no menu.

What I like most about this bar is how pleasant it is in the morning: sitting on the terrace with your first coffee and a croissant (they had several types), watching the shops begin to open and the people coming and going, is a real treat if you like to soak up the local rhythm of the city. We didn't actually go there for lunch or dinner, but whenever we passed by, it was always quite busy. Plus, since my apartment is nearby, I often took the opportunity to buy mineral water and other things I might need, making it even more convenient. The service has always been fast and friendly, and the value is excellent for the city center. A simple, authentic place, perfect for feeling part of Bologna from the first coffee of the day.

A classic just a few metres from the Duomo, this welcoming bar offers plenty of outside seating with a view of the central Via d'Azeglio where I drank a fantastic Spritz (even if the cold rice as an accompaniment was out of place) thank goodness there were also chips, fast and friendly staff.
