Fantastic osteria where Venetian products meet Japanese cuisine. Food is delicious and creative, service professional. We shall return.

One of those Venetian restaurants that make you feel you are in New York. At the same place of a traditional Osteria, that still maintains the old name at the entrance floor, you have a proudly international Japanese tavern. Simple indoors environment and a small outdoor terrace. Griendly service. Chic and young clientele. Small menu. No tablecloths.

Imagine being in Venice and entering what has all the appearance of a typical tavern with the barrel outside, the Venetian floor, the wooden tables and woven straw chairs, sitting at the table and, when you receive the menu, to be totally taken aback by reading names like udon, ramen, chirashi and gyoza.
The first reaction will certainly be one of amazement, as if faced with a sort of optical illusion. Don't be scared though, and let yourself be won over by the wonderful cuisine of Masahiro Homma, a chef originally from Okayama, in southern Japan, but Italian and Venetian by adoption. After a long apprenticeship in some of the best brigades of the lagoon city and various collaborations in which he was able to make himself appreciated, he finally found in the old Osteria Giorgione, near Campo Santi Apostoli, the place where he could continuously express his cuisine. It is authentic and "homemade" Japanese cuisine in the noblest sense of the term, but also very refined, made with ingredients from the Rialto market and with more or less evident contaminations of the lagoon tradition.
We tried:
- horse tataki
- eel chirashi
- ramen
- monkfish tempura
- Roquefort ice cream
- Tenerina cake
The service is conducted impeccably by Zenichi, who is friendly and helpful. The cellar is only natural, with all the advantages and disadvantages of the case. We chose a coppery Pinot Grigio from Ronco Severo, a winery in the eastern hills of Friuli, which unfortunately did not fully meet our expectations. It's a shame because the wonderful dishes of Masa & co. they deserved better.
Small flaw, a not exactly fantastic smell which, however, is unfortunately a characteristic of many Venetian places. In general, however, the restaurant could do with a little sprucing up and improved aesthetics because it is clearly old and the level of the cuisine certainly deserves a more contemporary location. Despite these considerations, the experience is still much more than positive.

A surprise, eating Japanese in a typical Venetian tavern. A piece of advice, a placemat, even paper, would be appreciated.
