History, curiosities, and identity of one of the symbols of the Upper Ionian Sea.
The Castle of Roseto Capo Spulico – often also called Castello Federiciano – dominates the Ionian coast of Cosenza from a rocky spur overlooking the sea. Its scenic location is one of the reasons it has become an icon of the area: reviews express their amazement at the view, the beach, and the mushroom-shaped rock at its foot.
🕰️ Origins and historical development
🛡️ Norman period (11th–12th centuries)
The original nucleus of the castle was built on a previous monastic settlement, as confirmed by some accounts reported in reviews.
The Normans, busy consolidating their dominion in southern Italy, built a coastal fortification here to control trade and defend the area from seaborne raids.
✝️ Templar Period (12th–13th Century)
The castle later passed to the Templars, who used it as a strategic point along the routes to the Holy Land.
Legend has it that the castle housed Templar relics and symbols, although there is no definitive proof. However, its location and defensive structure still fuel the fascination of this theory today.
🦅 Frederick II and the Network of Swabian Castles (13th Century)
The castle is traditionally associated with Frederick II of Swabia, who strengthened many coastal fortifications as part of his vast program of reorganizing the Kingdom of Sicily.
There are no documents attesting to his direct presence, but the architectural layout and strategic position fit it perfectly into Frederick's logic of territorial control.
🏰 Modern Age and Transformations
In the following centuries, the castle underwent various modifications, transforming from a military structure to a noble residence.
Today it also houses a restaurant and event spaces, as can be seen on the page you are viewing.
🧱 Architecture and Features
🔹 Structure on a Rocky Spur
Built directly on the rock, the castle dominates the coast with a unique visual impact.
🔹 Irregular Plan
Typical of medieval fortifications adapted to the terrain.
🔹 Towers and Walkways
Defensive elements that testify to its original function.
🔹 Internal courtyard and restored rooms
Now used for catering, events, and guided tours.

Small menu but very good. The staff are extremely attentive and beyond professional. We had a very nice lunch BUT the owner paces and watches you like a hawk. Kind of creepy, certainly not something we are used but the waiter had an Andy Garcia fibe. That was nice.

It's great to stumble upon a castle over a thousand years old along the way. The views are absolutely stunning! The restaurant is highly recommended; we had a seafood lunch and delicious, local wine. Michele, the owner of the castle, a wonderful man, escorted us and showed us around the castle. He shared the history and how his father began rebuilding it. A magical place, we wholeheartedly recommend it 🥰
