Tucked away from the bustling tourist corridors of Florence lies a true culinary gem: Arà è Sicilia. If you are seeking a thoroughly authentic Italian street food vibe for an excellent lunch, look no further than this delightful Sicilian enclave. It possesses that rare, magnetic charm of a genuine local haunt. You can immediately tell it is heavily beloved by the Florentine locals who pop in for their daily culinary fix, yet as a visitor, you are made to feel entirely welcome the very moment you cross the threshold.
The service here is, quite frankly, nothing short of wonderful. During my visit, I had the absolute pleasure of being served by the lovely Rachel, whose immense warmth and attentive nature elevated the entire dining experience. She navigated the bustling lunchtime rush with effortless grace, offering brilliant recommendations with a genuine, welcoming smile that made the cosy space feel much more like a close friend's dining room than a busy city eatery.
Now, onto the culinary main event. As a Cornish man, I have a deep, enduring appreciation for a proper baked pasty, and I actively make it my mission to seek out regional pastry variations whenever I travel worldwide. I can confidently say that Arà è Sicilia delivered an absolute masterclass with their remarkable scaccia patate e salsiccia. This traditional Sicilian stuffed flatbread is an utter revelation. The golden, expertly folded dough encases a rich, incredibly savoury filling of potato and sausage. Each generous bite provides that comforting, hearty satisfaction one always expects from a top-tier pasty, yet it sings with distinct, vibrant Italian flavours. It is perfectly seasoned, wonderfully textured, and absolutely unmissable.
To properly accompany this phenomenal lunch, you simply must order a glass of the Limone e Zenzero. This stunning lemon and ginger beverage is a bright revelation. It strikes an impeccable, refreshing balance between the sharp zest of fresh citrus and the warming, gentle kick of ginger root. It cleanses the palate beautifully between bites of the rich scaccia and provides a brilliantly revitalising boost that is absolutely perfect for a warm afternoon spent exploring the Tuscan capital.
In a city overflowing with exceptional options, Arà è Sicilia stands out by executing traditional street food to an extraordinarily high standard. It offers immense character, an authentically welcoming environment, and truly wonderful food that effortlessly bridges the gap between distant coastal traditions. Highly recommended.
