Antica trattoria Lo Gurfo In Valtournenche

Five of us had lunch on the last Friday of July, after making a reservation. This restaurant serves local cuisine. We thoroughly enjoyed the two platters, Cervino and Valtournenche. The Valdostana crespella and ricotta ravioli were delicious, as were the canelotti. The tagliatelle, though good, weren't quite up to par. We finished with a delicious venison stew. It was all accompanied by an excellent local wine. The service was impeccable, welcoming, and knowledgeable, including their wine list. We concluded with a chat with the owner and his daughter, two true ambassadors of local traditions and a love for the valley. We will return to this welcoming restaurant in an enchanting location.

This place isn't just an excellent restaurant and trattoria; it's a place that, at first glance, is already steeped in history—not just any history, but a family history spanning multiple generations. The restaurant is located in a natural setting that's already evocative: Gouffre des Busserailles. The interior is truly welcoming, and it truly feels like a welcome guest in a family atmosphere. This is further enhanced by the courtesy and kindness of the staff, who are truly professional and friendly. They're also happy to explain the history of the place and the family. All the dishes are carefully crafted, featuring traditional Aosta Valley dishes but also featuring other dishes (like Lo Gurfo cannellotti) that are truly signature to the restaurant. I highly recommend trying the menu because the flavors don't disappoint, even the desserts. Everything is taken care of down to the smallest detail, as evidenced by the fine tablecloths. For example, the napkins are embroidered, which isn't a given, given that other restaurants (not just bistros) sometimes only have disposable placemats. So, if you're in Breuil Cervinia, it's definitely worth the short drive (very short) to get here, because it's truly a different experience and more valuable than the well-known restaurants in the city.

Authentic place. This is where you need to come if you want a 100% Aosta Valley experience. The location resembles a great ravine (Lord of the Rings, home of the elves) inside caves carved out by the glacier. Authentic food and excellent Aosta Valley cuisine. Family-run for 7 generations. A truly unmissable place if you're in the Cervinia area. I absolutely recommend it!

Dishes are served in characteristic earthenware dishes. The food here is a true edible tale of the mountains, starting with Zuppa alla Valpellinentze, a masterpiece of rustic perfection where bread, broth, cabbage, and melted Fontina cheese blend together in a dense warmth that restores the spirit before the body. The rich, dense, and golden Polenta with Mushrooms exudes the moist scent of the woods and the texture of pure tradition. The first courses are signature masterpieces, unique creations like the gnocchi flavored with cheese and a bold touch of cinnamon, along with the homemade ravioli that challenge the palate with a poetic and bold contrast. The Meats in Wine and the Valdostana Cutlet are wonderfully hearty dishes, cooked with an ancient skill that respects the ingredients and enhances their succulence. The desserts are like reflections of the soul, where figs cooked in white wine and bombardino cream, accompanied by artisanal biscuits, offer a sweetness from times gone by, as intimate as a blazing fire. Each course is enhanced by an exceptionally well-stocked wine cellar, and the hostess, with grace, expertise, and a sincere smile, knows how to recommend the perfect pairing, guiding guests toward local wines that reflect the very rock on which the structure rests. What makes the experience at Lo Gurfo truly mystical is its symbiotic proximity to the Gouffre des Busserailles. Eating here, perhaps at the outdoor tables caressed by the Alpine breeze, means feeling the subterranean vibration of the waterfall cascading ten meters into the darkness of the cave, in a sublime contrast between the reassuring stability of a hot meal and the wild, untamed force of nature. This makes the Antica Trattoria Lo Gurfo not simply a place to enjoy a meal, but a total experience that nourishes the senses and heals the mind and heart. The Antica Trattoria Lo Gurfo is the perfect place for anyone seeking truth in food, poetry in the landscape, and authenticity in human encounters. An excellent typical Aosta Valley dinner in a beautiful little restaurant right above the "Marmitte dei Giganti" (with a view of the mountain gorges and waterfall!). Local history is in the air here: the family descends from the illustrious guide Carrell, revered throughout the valley. And if you ask the staff questions, they're happy to share anecdotes. A lovely evening, good food. It's worth leaving the village to drive to Lo Gurfo.
