Al Matarel In Milano

Dear beloved Matarel, we need a change of direction!! A restaurant that's a symbol of Milan, one of a kind. The last time I was there, however, it wasn't the usual magnificent experience. The ossobuco with risotto is a mystical, divine experience, 10/10. But the cutlet (36 euros), served with four baked potatoes, four of them, was very disappointing. Not to mention the service, terrible is a compliment. It took 30 minutes to order, the wine arrived, and the waiter served everyone except two gentlemen, rushing off. When we asked for parmesan cheese for the risotto, the answer was "of course." Too bad the parmesan never arrived. In short, the restaurant was known to be medium-high in price, but it was always worth it because it's not lunch/dinner but a dive into the past of old Milan. This last time, however, there was a bitter taste in my mouth, especially because after the disappointments over the cutlet and the service, the bill arrived, which this time around was not as pleasant as always. In short, matarel, if you want to uphold the reputation of Elide and her husband, a sudden change is necessary.

A typical Milanese restaurant in the Brera district serving traditional dishes and fresh pasta. We ordered the classics: cassoeula and ossobuco in gremolada with risotto, and I must say, we weren't expecting such portions. Everything was excellent; we'll be back for the classic cotoletta!

Specialist in Milanese cuisine. Lovely atmosphere and exceptional food. The polenta and mushroom risotto are excellent. The service was delightful. Great people.

The food is just amazing, tradicional Milanese food as good it can be. This restaurant was recommended, and we wanted to try some authentic Milanese food. We started with the thick cut of salame (tollone di salame della casa), it was so soft that you could spread on the bread. Then we has the polenta with Gorgonzola (Tortino bollente di Gorgonzola). Thus thing... it is amazing!! The piping hot dish creates a crust where the polenta and the Gorgonzola fuses together making that one of the best dishes of my life. For mains, I've ordered the ossobuco (Ossobuco in gremolada con risotto) the risotto was everything right. Creamy, al dente, tasty. The ossobuco was perfect, could cut with a spoon, the bone marrow could be accessed by a special spoon. The juice of the cooking was pure collagen. Just perfect. My wife had the tortellini with pumpkin, was very light and very well balanced flavours. The portions were massive, we stopped before the dessert.

Basic, the prices are excessive compared to what is served. Valid for tasting Milanese meals but not fabulous. (An honest opinion is needed)

Mi aspettavo nel complesso un’esperienza migliore. Forse la cosa che più ci ha fatto specie, è l’insensato rapporto qualità prezzo. Noi siamo milanesi, non turisti; abbiamo girato e provato decine di locali milanesi e centinaia di ristoranti, quindi abbiamo dei termini di paragone e sinceramente non è minimamente accettabile pagare 28 euro per un vitello tonnato che abbiamo giudicato “normale”. Non è accettabile avere dei ricarichi quali quelli che abbiamo visto per i vini, quando la carta è molto, ma molto limitata e quindi non giustifica in nessun modo dei costi di gestione di una cantina di diversa ampiezza e profondità. Il mio risotto alla milanese era assolutamente normale, mentre giudico eccellente il piatto di lumache in umido. Giudizio negativo sulla location che va bene essere d’epoca, ma una rinfrescata e ripulita non gli farebbe di certo perdere lo stile “vecchio” a beneficio di un guadagno per la vista.

In un vecchio vicolo del centro, nell’elegante quartiere di Brera e non lontano dal Castello Sforzesco, si trova una delle osterie più autentiche della città, dove si respira ancora l’atmosfera della Milano di una volta. L’ambiente è caloroso e un po’ spartano, vivacizzato con le note in sottofondo dei brani di celebri cantanti meneghini (dalla Vanoni a Celentano con lo storico “ragazzo della via Gluck”). Il locale, in passato tradizionale meta di artisti e politici, è perfetto per immergersi nella tradizione culinaria milanese. Propone infatti risotti eccezionali (da provare quello alla monzese, ossia sfumato con vino rosso e salsiccia), ossobuco in gremolada, cotoletta, mondeghilli, e soprattutto una sostanziosa e “impegnativa” cassöeula, piatto iconico della tradizione lombarda preparato con verza e carne di maiale e servito con polenta. Spicca tra i dolci il saporito “Michelac”, una torta di pane di origine brianzola, con cacao, uvetta e pinoli. Personale estremamente cordiale, prezzi un po’ sopra la media ma giustificato dalla qualità degli ingredienti e della generosità delle porzioni, decisamente abbondanti.
