A La Scuela In Venezia

There is very little left of "authentic" Venice. Mass tourism, cruise ships, an aging and declining resident population and "Airbnb neighborhoods" where short term rentals replace actual residents, have made extinct centuries of Venetian cultural heritage. There are a few working class areas where families with hundreds of years of history still reside. These areas are where the families of the trash boat operators, the vaporetto drivers and maintenance staff, and other blue collar folks live. One corner like this is near the Arsenale where a humble gathering place, Osteria A La Scuela is located.. Those looking for typical table service, a big menu to choose from, or would find a microwave oven a horror, should stay away. Those who want to mingle with some locals, eat what they have to offer and drink generous pours of wine for 4 Euros a glass, will be rewarded. On a rainy night in November, newly arrived, tired and hungry us, found the plates they brought out and the suggested wine a perfect welcome.

Good food, casual place but prices too high - not worth it

A place away from the main tourist streets, where you can experience the local atmosphere. It's tucked away in an alley without canal views, which might deter some tourists, but the price and the food are well worth it. The service is very friendly, with lots of smiles and attentive staff. The seafood and fish tapas are exceptional, as are the ones featuring local and seasonal vegetables. Don't go for typical options like lasagna. This place gives you the chance to try authentic and delicious tapas.

Excellent... The best meal since I arrived in Italy. I've been traveling around the country for 13 days and nothing has pleased me more than this. I will definitely return!

A welcoming place with very friendly staff, just steps from Piazza San Marco. The cicchetti are fabulous, and all at an affordable price.

If you want to gwt away from the tourists, and sit and eat very decent Cicchetti with a reasonably priced drink, this is it. Friendly. Local. Oasis from the crowds.

They recommended it to us as a place to have 'Chicchetti'. The truth is that we had a great time. A good option for a bite to eat.

I'm happy to return to this place. The atmosphere is magnificent. You feel right at home. It's a bacaro similar to the ones I frequented in my youth.
